Summary
- Wine is the last food to unlock, requiring high points and a monastery
- Dairy will take time and land but can be started early with coin
- Fish is the best early food source, easy to get and requires minimal space
There are a whole lot of different food groups that can be grown or made in Foundation. While some are very easy to get, some will take a lot of money, leveling, and time. But players might be wondering what order they should get them in.
If anyone is out there looking at the Progression menu and wondering which items they should start worrying about first, they can find all of the foods in order in the article below. These go from the least to most needed in Foundation.
9
Wine
The Fruit of the Monks and Nuns
Wine will be the last food item that most will unlock in Foundation. In order to get it, players will need 100 prosperity and 150 Clergy Splendour points. Since wine can only be made by a monastery, players will have to build up their religious center, unlocking all the way down to the third tier of the Clergy route.
8
Other Monastic Foodstuffs
Including Honey, Military Rations, Vegetables, and Herbs
Unless the main goal is to make the biggest and best monastery the world has ever seen, players can wait on building for honey, vegetables, war rations, and all the other things monasteries are good for growing. However, herbs are an excellent item for trade routes, if a player has the money, time, and people to make get herb farming going. Honey can also be helpful if they want to start making candles in the early game for a good trading item and goods to sell to their villagers.
7
Milk and Cheese
The Dairy Products in Common Path
Dairy farming will not be available until there is 100 prosperity; it will be located on the Common Path. This will be land- and time-intensive, so players will have to wait quite a while to start making their own milk and cheese products. However, they can get started early if they have some extra coin to buy some land and build up milk stores, even if they don’t have the people or money to start churning out cheeses.
6
Beer
Tavern Fuel for the Laymen
Beer production is available in the second-tier Common Path which unlocks after 50 prosperity points in this popular indie game. In order to get beer going, players will need to first have wheat fields already, then start a hops field, then ferment them into alcohol. This is one of the later-game foods that players shouldn’t worry about right away. Beer is a must-have for a successful tavern, though, so players will want to keep that in mind as they enter the middle of the game.
5
Berry Brew
A Simple Drink Made From Berries
Berry Brew is a drink that can be made and sold from inside a tavern set to brewing it. These are part of the first line of upgrades for taverns, and players can unlock them pretty quickly with only 10 prosperity and 25 Labour Splendour. Berry Brew isn’t a super useful item, but it is a great thing for trading with neighbors. Berry Brew isn’t the best moneymaker, however; if players want to really rake in the coin, they should look at the items below it on this list.
4
Meat
Made From Wild Boars
Meat is a great source of refined foods and money via trade routes in this city-building simulation game. It’s much faster to get established than bread because players only need to build two buildings. However, meat requires a lot of hunting ground to be left without knocking down any trees or building anything nearby. It’s a great item to trade with other towns, and it is a source of cheap and easily refined foodstuffs for serfs and commoners.
3
Berries
The Early-Game Food Source
While berries are the easiest things to build for, they aren’t refined foods, and they are picked slowly by multiple villagers. While it’s fine when players have time to build for it, they might be better off fishing first instead. However, they don’t need to unlock anything to start picking; they just need access to some bushes and maybe some storage to get a good berry business and store them for making brew later on.
2
Bread
The Most Important Food in Foundation
Bread is a massively important product in this city builder, and players should prioritize getting their wheat farm going as soon as possible. Bread is needed for unlocking the trade route to Davenport, as a refined food source for villagers, for quests, and for improving trade routes. While berries and meat are far easier to get, bread is much more important to prioritize as quickly as possible. Building a store of this important food is a great way to have a stable economy, happy villagers, and a source of a whole lot of money as well.
1
Fish
The Best Food Source in the Game
Fish is the fastest, easiest way anyone can get food for their village in this cozy indie game very early. In the beginning, if players spend a few coins to unlock fishing, villagers will never go hungry. And they only need one villager to man the fisher’s hut as opposed to three for the same amount of berries.
Fishing huts take up almost no space either; the only thing they need to build one is access to a water source that has a fish icon inside it.
