Did you know we’ve only explored around 5% of the world’s oceans? 5%! Whatever you heard about ghosts or the undead, true terror lies in the crushing darkness of the deep, as the upcoming Beneath is keen to remind you. Taking inspiration from the likes of Bioshock and FEAR, it’s a first-person game that places the fate of humanity at your feet – no pressure!
Lovecraftian creatures stalk the corridors of the abandoned facility Beneath takes place in, where you control Noah Quinn, a diver whose latest trip goes slightly off course. The FPS game has you skulking around, blasting through strange monsters who’ve arisen from the depths, all the while with something much greater and more horrifying gathering energy.
The latest trailer, which you can watch below, comes across akin to Half-Life, with the feeling of experiments that have gone completely out of control. Noah has to push through spaces full of zombified bodies, using whatever assets the environment provides in the horror game to get by. None of it is quite as decadent as Bioshock’s Rapture, but that sinking feeling (pun intended) of being too many leagues under the sea is clear.
Developer Camel101 previously put out Those Who Remain, an atmospheric small town chiller with similar ideas to Beneath. The team has clearly gotten more ambitious in the years since then, but staying rooted to exploring our collective fear of the unknown. Heady, fertile thematic territory.
Right now, there’s no release window for Beneath, but hopefully we’ll hear something more soon. Like Those Who Remain, the upcoming PC game is being published by Wired Productions, whose recent releases include Gori: Cuddly Carnage and Tin Hearts.
