Summary
- Sonic 3 is now the second highest-grossing video game movie ever at the box office.

- The only video game adaptation to have made more is the Mario movie which generated a staggering $1.3 billion.
Hard to believe how far we’ve come since the disastrous reveal of Sonic the Hedgehog‘s original movie design. A redesign due to backlash and three movies later, not only has the trilogy generated more than $1 billion at the box office, but as of this past weekend, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the second highest-grossing video game of all time.
Sonic 3 sped into the number two spot behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie three weeks ago in the US, and now the threequel has climbed up to that same spot at the worldwide box office. According to the video game movie adaptation box office rankings at The Numbers, Sonic 3 has now made $462 million at the global box office with this past weekend’s numbers added to its running total.

Sonic Director Has Taken Requests To Add Silver To The Movies Into Consideration
A look at some of Sonic 3’s concept art suggests there were once plans to include Silver in the prequel.
The last two films it needed to move past to get up into the silver medal position were Detective Pikachu and Warcraft. While the live-action Pokemon movie performed pretty well in and outside of the US, Warcraft was very much an international hit. With $438 million, Warcraft was the number one video game movie for seven years until Mario came along, and now Sonic 3 has knocked it down to third place.
Sonic 3 Is Now The Second Most Successful Video Game Movie Ever
What You Gonna Do About It, Pokemon?
That will almost certainly be it for box office ranking updates for Sonic 3 as even though the only video game movie left for it to surpass is 2023’s animated Mario epic. Generating an eye-watering $1.3 billion, everyone who has seen Sonic 3 since it hit cinemas in December would need to go and see the threequel at least twice more before the Blue Blur would even be in with a chance of moving past his oldest rival.
How long Sonic 3 can hold onto the number two spot is also an interesting topic to dissect. A Minecraft Movie will be released on April 4, 2025, and no matter how hard its trailers have made you roll your eyes, that film is almost certainly going to make a lot of money in theaters. If it can make $500 million then Sonic 3 might be knocked down a place. Each new Sonic movie has made more than the last though, so if that pattern continues, Sonic 4 might take that spot back when it gets here in 2027.
