Summary

  • Stranger Things may have its final season in 2025 but could return in the future due to its popularity.
  • The series could draw inspiration from Stephen King’s IT to continue the story with the characters as adults.
  • Introducing a new, supernatural threat in Hawkins post-2025 could make a successful comeback due to audience nostalgia.

Stranger Things is progressing toward its fifth season in 2025, and the current belief is that it will be the final season of the Netflix show, too. That’s certainly going to be the case for the immediate future, but it doesn’t mean that Stranger Things cannot return as a series at some point in the future.

The show might wrap up all storylines when people return to Hawkins later this year, but due to its popularity, audiences will eventually hope for more content from this science fiction epic. One easy way to do that would be to take inspiration from a Stephen King classic that audiences have often compared to the Netflix series.

How Stranger Things Could Copy Stephen King’s IT

destiny 2 setup inspired by pennywise it movie

IT is one of the greatest horror stories of all time. It is a gripping novel that has put fear into readers for decades and has also been converted into various live-action versions over the years. No matter which version of IT people have viewed, the decision has always been made to split the story into two distinct chapters. The first is when the main characters are all children, in a similar manner to how the main cast of Stranger Things has been throughout the series. The second chapter of IT then follows the same characters, all returning to their hometown as adults because the threat of Pennywise has resurfaced.

The story King wrote is detailed enough in both aspects that they’ve demanded their own movies over the years. However, while they’re two completely different movies in tone and drama, there’s also a level of familiarity due to the characters involved, allowing audiences to connect again instantly. Fans have cared enough about the overall story and the world that has been created that they want to revisit it, and that’s something that Netflix could exploit, given the popularity of Stranger Things.

Could Stranger Things Copy IT In The Same Way

Vecna in stranger things

Netflix could very easily copy IT with this concept of having the story continue when the characters are adults because the villainous threat is similar in the sense that it’s supernatural and something that could realistically still exist. In IT, Pennywise reappears and begins causing more horror to those in the area, forcing the original characters to return home in a bid to destroy him once and for all. That’s something that could happen within Stranger Things, as it would be easy to believe that Vecna would be able to reappear if they killed him in the first place. The character has powers that are beyond the realms of normality, and that means creative decisions like this can easily be made.

In fact, it would be even easier for Stranger Things to return because the Upside Down is home to a variety of creatures rather than just one that features in IT. Therefore, with Pennywise, even if the heroes destroy Vecna completely when the show comes to an end in 2025, there’s no reason a different, even greater threat couldn’t be created that would force all of the characters to return to Hawkins to try and fix the situation once more. They could be drawn back by an older character such as Jim Hopper, who would be too old to provide much of a fight at that point, and that would allow the younger characters to step back in to try and fix everything again.

Would People Still Want Stranger Things Content?

There can never be guarantees about how well shows will age, and a lot of that will likely be down to the quality of the final season, as that’s what people tend to remember most. However, there can be no denying that Stranger Things is one of the most popular shows in modern history, consistently drawing huge viewing figures while also enhancing the reputations of the actors involved in the show. The final season has a lot of anticipation surrounding it, and it is expected to do great numbers for Netflix again, which is why the streaming platform will likely want to continue using the property when possible.

For this idea to work, there will need to be at least 10 years between the end and when Stranger Things returns for the actors to grow old enough for a serious change to occur. However, it’s something that would absolutely get audiences interested because nostalgia in the world of television and movies is always a big deal. People love seeing something they’re familiar with while being slightly new at the same time, and that’s what this idea would provide. It would be different enough to feel unique and worthwhile, yet the world would be similar, and so would the characters. That’s something that works perfectly for IT, and it would no doubt do the same for Stranger Things, with the setting just being moved forward in time.
