Season of Witchcraft introduced a new mechanic to Diablo 4 involving Witchcraft Powers, passives that passively provide a variety of bonuses and other effects that can help builds reach new heights. There are 25 of these powers in total, and while most of them can be bought in the Witches’ Coven, four of them can only be unlocked via Forgotten Altars.
Forgotten Altars are shrines that unlock the four remaining Lost Witchcraft Powers. They can be found randomly in any of Diablo 4’s dungeons, but there are some caveats that can make finding one very time-consuming.

The Heir of Perdition is a hot ticket item for many Diablo 4 builds. Learn how to get your own here.
Diablo 4 Forgotten Altar Locations
As stated by in-game tooltips, Forgotten Altars can appear in the dungeons of Sanctuary. However, they will only start appearing in Torment difficulty, starting at a measly spawn rate of 1% in T1 and capping at a 5% spawn rate in T5. Altars can spawn in normal dungeons, Nightmare Dungeons, and the Pit. It’s unclear if they can spawn in the Kurast Undercity.
Players who specifically want to just look for Forgotten Altars, the best place to go is Hoarfrost Demise in the Fractured Peaks, just north of the Bear Tribe Refuge Waypoint. This dungeon’s layout is always generated to be small and fairly straightforward — it’s first floor is almost always comprised of just a few short corridors, while the lower floor is almost always generated in several ring-shaped paths.
Best Place to Find Forgotten Altars
You can easily run through Hoarfrost Demise with a quick-clearing Diablo 4 class build, or you can just ignore the monsters altogether and focus on mapping out the dungeon. Forgotten Altars have a special icon on the minimap, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for any symbols that might appear while you’re running around.
Alternatively, we strongly recommend farming the Pit so you can level up your Glyphs while hunting for Forgotten Altars. Your odds of finding an altar here are much lower since maps tend to be bigger, but if you want to make efficient use of your time, it’s best to do this method instead.
Increasing Forgotten Altar Spawn Rates
You can increase the spawn rates of Forgotten Altars in dungeons by using Draughts of Whispers, special consumables that can drop from Whisper caches or while doing Headhunt events and Roothold Dungeons in Diablo 4. Drinking one of these doubles the chances of you finding a Forgotten Altar and increases the chances of finding a Fugitive Head by 50%.
For best effect, save Draughts of Whispers for Torment IV. Doing so will double Forgotten Altar spawn rates from 5% to 10%.
