PlatinumGames has had a rather tumultuous existence. Founded by the remnants of Clover Studio after it was shutdown by Capcom, it became one of the leading developers in terms of action games, making a slick style of combat few could reach. Many of those games didn’t sell exceptionally though, leading PlatinumGames to make quite a few licenced games.

10 Best Action Games From The 2010s
When you think of pure action games of the 2010 decade, you think of titles that have raised the bar like no others before them.
As such, the studios efforts are very divided between those games that are entirely original, and those that were made to make ends meet. It’s a diverse set of games though with more than just the character-action games that define them being released. Let’s take a look through PlatinumGames library and see just how many games it has made.
How Many Original Games Has PlatinumGames Made?
A studio founded with many prestigious developers, including Hideki Kamiya of Devil May Cry and Okami, it didn’t take long for Platinum to get picked up. This began initially with a four-game publishing deal with Sega. Far and away, the most successful of these four games was Bayonetta, which led to one of Capcom’s most prominent publishers.
After Sega’s lack of interest in a Bayonetta sequel, Nintendo approached them to create it as a Wii U exclusive instead. As part of this, Nintendo agreed to publish Platinum’s in-development The Wonderful 101 as well. From this point on, the vast majority of Platinum’s original titles were published by Nintendo.

Infinite Space was a co-developed project alongside Nude Maker.
The Wonderful 101 wasn’t the big hit that Platinum hoped it would be though, and so the studio’s original output slowed dramatically until Astral Chain in 2019. From this point on, Platinum tried to push further from licenced games, and even self-publishing. This started with getting the full rights to The Wonderful 101 and publishing the remaster itself.
And that is where Platinum stands today. Its own titles are self-published, while the Bayonetta series is handled by Nintendo, and licenced games published by the respective studios. All in all, this has resulted in 13 original games from Platinum, or 14 if you want to count The Wonderul 101 Remastered.
How Many Collaboration Games Has PlatinumGames Made?
After Sega refused to pick up a Bayonetta sequel, and their general output slowed, Platinum started to pick up plenty of licenced deals. The vast majority of these came from Activision, though the most famous of all is also the studio’s first collobartion game – Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
This lead to a series of additional licenced games, though none of them met the same success as Metal Gear, financially or critically, until Nier: Automata. From that point on, Platinum has returned to their own original titles, though the sheer number of games that were made between 2013 and 2017 is absurd.

Does PlatinumGames Only Make Character Action Games?
PlatinumGames, even by its own admission, is known for making stylish and challenging action games. Bayonetta is the epitome of this, while the likes of Nier Automata and Astral Chain how how the studio stretches those ideas into other genres. That said, while most of its games carry that action DNA, it is not the only type of game the studio can make.
Bayonetta Origins is a great example of this, having a much higher focus on being a puzzle-adventure game than any deep need for intricate damage. The same is true for Star Fox Zero, which is an on-rails shooter. Even Sol Cresta is an old-style vertical shooter, picking up the series after a 30 year hiatus.
By all means, the studio excels when it comes to action gameplay, though it has made great attempts to branch out from that to show that its expertise can handle other genres as well.
All counted though, PlatinumGames has developed 21 games, or 22 including The Wonderful 101 Remastered.
