Kishimoto will be supervising the new Naruto episodes. This is good news for fans.

The Boruto anime did bring some amazing moments for old characters like Naruto and Sasuke, and many fans do miss it. Fans have been wondering why the series went on a hiatus, and apparently, filler might have been a reason for the anime going off-air.

Why The Boruto Anime Was Put on Hiatus

One of the Reasons is the Large Amount of Filler Episodes

Sadly for many fans of the Boruto series, a while ago, the anime went on an indefinite hiatus. This all started on March 26, 2023, when the last episode aired, which was episode 293. Ever since then, it’s unknown when or if the anime will return.

Boruto is known for its massive number of filler episodes, and recently, it was revealed that one of the reasons the anime went on an indefinite hiatus was the fact that the fillers made up the majority of the episodes, even more than the canon material itself.

From what is being said, Studio Pierrot, the studio responsible for the Boruto anime, shelved the anime while studying new strategies, as was mentioned many animators, both in-house and freelancers, find no passion or motivation to work on such a large amount of filler episodes.

It was also reported that, while the filler itself isn’t the decision of Studio Pierrot, they have the power to decline to produce that many.

An animator chipped in their two cents on X long ago about the matter, mentioning how Studio Pierrot could’ve refused to produce that many episodes, and how this all affected the anime’s quality:

When will The Boruto Anime Return?

No one knows right now when the Boruto anime will return, but one thing is for sure, it won’t be anytime soon.

There has been no word on the anime’s current status, and it is likely just not being worked on. The Studio might be waiting for more manga content to come out, as that would enable them to limit the amount of filler episodes. The anime could also possibly return as a seasonal anime if it does ever return, which also solves the quality and filler problems.
