Animal Crossing's Mean Villagers Deserve New Lives on Switch 2

The next Animal Crossing seems guaranteed considering what Nintendo has in store in the near future. The company has revealed a trailer for its next console, the Switch 2, and its major IPs are bound to make their way into the next generation device. With Animal Crossing being one of the biggest, one only has to wonder what kind of game it eventually hits the new system. If the team behind its development intends to bring back what made the previous games successful, then perhaps it should also consider putting in the “mean” villagers that were and still are adored by fans.

As the Animal Crossing games continue to evolve with each generation, there are some things each iteration has left behind or wasn’t able to carry over that fans have missed. One of the best examples would be villagers whose personalities could be considered mean, as despite their rude behavior and dialogue, they were entertaining characters that helped bring life to whatever title they were in. While recent Animal Crossing games no longer have them, Nintendo has the opportunity to have them come back in the next game that’s likely being planned for the future Switch 2.

Why Mean Villagers Should Return in an Animal Crossing Game for the Switch 2

Some of the best villagers in Animal Crossing are often the most memorable, and the mean ones across the franchise fit that bill too. There are fans who have been asking that they make a return, as the audacious but amusing NPCs can liven up the player’s experience due to things such as:

  • The meaner dialogue can be seen as a breath of fresh air compared to the pleasant exchanges one expects from most villagers, showing that the characters have more personality other than being nice
  • The unexpected factor of having such rude behavior potentially coming from sweet-looking characters made for a funny contrast and could endear players to such mean NPCs
  • The amount of impolite or sharp things such characters could say and the different situations that lead them to do so would make for many interesting moments for players to discover over time

Whenever the next Animal Crossing makes its debut on the Switch 2, Nintendo has to make sure that it comes with mean villagers. Bringing them back would be a great reason to play the next game in the franchise, rather than just sticking to New Horizons.

How Nintendo Can Appease Both Lovers and Haters of Mean Villagers

Adding more villagers in the next Animal Crossing could help benefit the game, but some may not like it if it involves the return of mean villagers. To ensure this won’t be an issue, Nintendo might provide an option that lets players adjust such NPCs and make them as rude and insensitive as possible or barely at all. This way, those who adore or loathe mean villagers can choose how they want them to act in the game, allowing for experiences that are tailored to both. Also, the differences in changing the characters’ behavior could incentivize people to try out either option, resulting in more replay value.

The next Animal Crossing could work wonders with the Switch 2 so long as it has the right components, and it’s possible that mean villagers could be one of them. The brashness, wit, and unpredictability such NPCs can bring is why fans who’ve played previous iterations enjoyed them, and why they would make great additions that can help elevate the next game to great success.
