Ganyu is one of Genshin Impact‘s oldest hypercarries and a character that revolutionized Genshin’s combat through her reliance on her special Charged Attacks rather than her Skill or Burst. She dominated the Genshin meta at release, and with the help of her strong DPS, fun gameplay, and adorable design, she has become one of Genshin Impact’s most popular characters.

Genshin isn’t the same as it used to be, however, and Ganyu’s relevance has changed with time. She’s still an amazing character, but there are some considerations to be made. Here are some reasons to pull for Ganyu, and some to instead choose a different character.

Ganyu Is A Splendid Cryo DPS

She Uses Her Strong Charged Attacks For Burst Damage

Ganyu is a strong Cryo hypercarry who can use her enhanced special Charged Attacks to deal immense AOE damage in a variety of team archetypes. She can be played in Freeze teams to stun and defeat large hordes of tiny enemies, or in a Melt Team to buff her Frostlake Arrows and unleash large icy nukes on her foes.

Her range, AOE, and ease of play let Ganyu still have a place in current-day Genshin Impact despite her numbers not comparing to carries that have come out later, such as Neuvillette.

Ganyu’s Damage Is Locked Behind Her Charged Attacks

Not Everyone Likes Long Charge Times

Genshin Impact characters usually specialize into one of their skills and base their playstyles around it. For Ganyu, this ends up being her enhanced Charged Attack: Frostlake Arrow. These arrows deal high Cryo damage and then explode into tinier arrows with a larger AOE, dealing even higher damage.

Amos’ Bow is a standard weapon made to fit Ganyu’s playstyle, granting her ATK and increasing the damage of her Frostlake Arrows by a huge margin. If you accidentally end up getting the weapon, you may feel encouraged to get Ganyu as well.

The Amos’ Bow is still Ganyu’s best weapon in her traditional Freeze teams. However, it’s only slightly better than other options in these and worse than even certain four-star weapons in non-Freeze teams.

With how Genshin Impact has evolved over time, the weapon has lost its appeal, even on Ganyu. There are more ways to gain ATK than ever, and most of the harder content in the game is locked to bosses who cannot be Frozen. It’s still an amazing weapon, just not worth pulling Ganyu for.

Ganyu Can Be Played In Multiple Playstyles

Freeze DPS, Reverse Melt DPS, And Support As Well!

Genshin Impact characters are usually created with a specific playstyle in mind. Alhaitham is made to be a Spread DPS, Neuvillette is an AOE menace with his Hydro laser, and Xiao relies on his Plunge Attacks for his damage. While this is true for almost every character in the game, Genshin players sometimes find a way to utilize a character’s kit in a way different from its intended purpose.

Ganyu is a shining example of this, being played in a plethora of team archetypes despite her kit very clearly favoring Freeze teams. Even Ganyu’s highest DPS team isn’t a Freeze one, but rather Ganyu Reverse Melt with Bennett.

Ganyu Needs Shields In Non-Freeze Teams

She Needs Protection When Charging Her Shots

One problem that every Charged Attack bow user in Genshin faces is not getting interrupted until your arrow is fully charged. Later characters have ways of helping themselves with it by increasing their charge times in the case of Tighnari and Sethos and gaining flight in the case of Chasca.

Ganyu, being one of Genshin Impact’s earliest characters, has nothing built into her kit to help her sustain during the long charge time of her Frostlake Arrows. This isn’t a problem in Freeze teams, since Frozen enemies won’t be attacking you. However, if you plan on instead putting Ganyu’s Melt teams to use, getting a strong shielder like Citlali or Zhongli will do wonders for your comfort and DPS.

Ganyu Is Good At Against Multiple Enemies

Ganyu is a character that functions best in content dealing with hordes of small enemies, rather than strong isolated bosses. This is because all her skills have large AOEs, including her Frostlake Arrows. Furthermore, fighting against non-boss enemies lets Ganyu use her Freeze teams, the teams Ganyu was made for.

She can still perform amazingly in boss content, but her specialty will always be horde content. Even if you’re not using her as a main DPS, Ganyu’s large Burst does a good job at freezing entire fields when paired with something like Ayato’s Burst.

Ganyu Can Work As A Cryo Support

Her Skill And Burst Are Supportive In Nature

Ganyu’s primary role is that of a strong DPS. However, the range and AOE of her Cryo Elemental Burst and Skill make her an amazing support for applying tons of Cryo in a large radius around herself. This lets Ganyu work as a strong Cryo off-fielder, even without using her special Charged Attacks.

This strong off-field Cryo application, coupled with Ganyu’s Elemental Skill taunting enemies, makes her a good alternative to Diona or Rosaria in many Freeze or Melt teams.

Ganyu Doesn’t Need CRIT Rate In Freeze Teams

Blizzard Strayer And Her Passive Already Grant Her 60 Percent

Ganyu is a Cryo DPS that functions well in Freeze teams due to the large range and AoE of both her skills and her Frostlake Arrows. This lets Ganyu make use of the Blizzard Strayer artifact set, one of the strongest sets for Cryo units in Genshin Impact.

The Blizzard Strayer essentially grants the user 40 percent CRIT Rate on Frozen enemies. Furthermore, Ganyu has a passive that increases her CRIT Rate by another 20 percent upon shooting a Frostlake Arrows, totaling to around 60 percent CRIT Rate without taking any artifact or weapon stats into account.
