Pokemon TCG Pocket: How to Trade
Trading in Pokemon Pocket is less fun and much more complicated than we all thought, so here’s a guide to help digest what’s going on.
Before we begin, we’ve excluded obvious counters to the Mewtwo ex meta, like Pikachu ex, since most players are already familiar with them. Instead, this list highlights underrated responses that deserve more attention.
Since the Space-Time Smackdown set just launched, we haven’t had enough time to test potential counters for Mew ex from this release. However, we’ll update this guide if the metagame shifts significantly due to the new cards.

Arbok & Weezing
Lock Mewtwo In, Knock Mewtwo Out
One of the earliest counter setups in Pocket was the Arbok and Weezing combo, which helped shape one of the first anti-meta lineups focused on taking down Mewtwo ex and Gardevoir decks. The good news is that this toxic Dark duo is still a reliable answer to the Mewtwo meta.
Since Mewtwo ex is weak to Dark types, a combined attack from Weezing and Arbok deals 130 damage. That might not seem like enough to take down Mewtwo ex’s 150 HP, but here’s the catch—Arbok locks Mewtwo ex in for an extra turn. This prevents it from retreating, giving you the perfect opportunity to finish it off in the next round.
3
Tauros & Farfetch’d
Sacrifice One, Win Two
An underrated counter to the Mewtwo meta is the Colorless duo of Tauros and Farfetch’d. Ideally, Farfetch’d takes the lead, absorbing up to two attacks from an unprepared Mewtwo ex while dealing 80 damage in return. Then, you swap it out for Tauros—the one from Mythical Island—to deliver an extra 120 damage, taking down Mewtwo ex before it can unleash its ultimate attack.
Now, you might argue that Mewtwo ex isn’t that slow and, with Gardevoir’s support, can charge up its ultimate faster. While that’s true, the Tauros and Farfetch’d duo guarantees a minimum of 160 damage (assuming each gets in one attack), which is still enough to counter Mewtwo ex effectively.
2
Marshadow & Mew ex
Retaliation and Reproduction
With a boosted 100-damage attack, Marshadow is one of the best counters to Mewtwo ex. You set it up on the board, waiting for Mewtwo ex to take down your first attacker. Once that happens, you bring in Marshadow, now in Revenge mode, to hit Mewtwo ex with a 100-damage strike.
If that’s not enough to finish the job, you have Mew ex ready to step in. Using its Genome Hacking ability, Mew ex can copy Mewtwo ex’s ultimate attack, delivering a 150-damage blow that guarantees a knockout.
The advantage of Mew ex is that its ultimate move, Genome Hacking, requires only Colorless Energy. This makes it easy to slot into a Fighting-type deck alongside Marshadow and other meta tech cards like Hitmonlee.
1
Scolipede & Weezing
Sting Before the Slaughter
Scolipede has had a rollercoaster run in Pokemon TCG Pocket’s meta. It quickly became a dominant anti-meta pick, winning several tournaments, only to fade into obscurity just as fast. Still, its effectiveness against the Mewtwo ex meta remains undeniable.
By poisoning Mewtwo ex with Weezing, you inflict 60 damage—50 from the basic attack and 10 from Poison. Follow that up with an attack from Scolipede, and you deal another 120 damage, enough to take Mewtwo ex down.
The only drawback is Scolipede’s 140 HP, which leaves it vulnerable to Mewtwo ex’s ultimate attack, dealing 150 damage. To avoid this risk, make sure to bring Scolipede in only when it can attack immediately.
