The PC re-release of The Sims 2 has come out to an underwhelming reception on Steam, with “Mixed” user reviews. The Legacy Collection version of The Sims and The Sims 2 recently rolled out on PC on January 31, 2025.
For more than two decades, The Sims franchise has been an unwavering constant in the simulation genre, raking in millions in revenue for publisher EA. Since the latest entry in the series, 2014’s The Sims 4, went free-to-play in 2022, its player-base has grown even bigger in a short period. In October 2024, the American gaming giant revealed that more than 15 million new Sims players had joined the game in the preceding year. While the Maxis-developed game has certainly seen a significant inflow of new players in recent years, there is also a sizable number of longtime fans who form a major part of the game’s audience. Recently, fans in the latter category received exciting news as EA re-launched the first two Sims games on modern PCs. However, not everyone playing those classic titles seems to have been won over by the re-release.

In particular, The Sims 2 Legacy Collection is faring worse than expected on Steam, having a “Mixed” rating based on 536 reviews at the time of writing. Most of the negative player feedback revolves around frequent crashes and a range of different bugs. Importantly, the underwhelming reviews are not just coming from players who gave up on the game within an hour but also from those who have several hours of playtime on it. One user, who played The Sims 2 re-release for over eight hours, complained about the game deleting their Sims without reason. Another player, with upwards of seven hours logged in, reported facing a crash right after creating their Sim character and also mentioned an annoying bug affecting the in-game oven.
The Sims 2 Re-Release Faces Criticism, Whereas The Sims Legacy Collection Gets Positive Response
Amid such poor reviews, a silver lining for The Sims 2 Legacy Collection has been its concurrent player count on Steam, which peaked at around 5K players on launch day. Although it’s nowhere near comparable to the daily engagement received by The Sims 4, it’s still a remarkable number for the re-release of an old game. On the flipside, The Sims Legacy Collection currently holds a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam, based on 278 user reviews. However, the original here seems to be the less popular one between the two Sims re-releases, peaking at around 2K concurrent players on Steam on launch day.
For Sims fans, 2025 is an important year as it marks the 25th anniversary of the highly popular franchise. Based on reports, Maxis is already preparing to launch yet another Sims 4 DLC, ensuring a flow of fresh content for fans.
