The Sims and The Sims 2 were re-released on Steam yesterday with all of the expansions and DLC. While many were excited to see these classics finally be made available to pick up play in their entirety, there was criticism right out of the gate, as some were unhappy with the price point.
Now that fans have had a chance to play the relaunched games, it seems that the mood has dipped even more. The Sims 2 Legacy Collection has mixed reviews on Steam, with many describing the re-release as “lazy” and a “cash grab” from EA.
The Sims 2 Has Mixed Reviews On Steam
The first Sims game is going down much better
In the negative reviews, players complain that this re-release doesn’t make enough changes to justify the price tag.
“This screams ‘lazy cash grab’ and honestly? It hurts,” reads a review from Steam user Sprague. “I know it’s not a remaster, but I wish we have more stuff than just ‘hey, let’s make y’all pay for a quick compatibility fix that you could get on the internet for free, from fans that actually care cause we obviously don’t’.
“I know I shouldn’t complain because we finally those great games back but… there’s literally no quality of life improvement, at all.”
Steam user GyLala agrees. “No fixes or anything, just a cash grab rerelease. What a joke,” they write. “This trash for the 25th anniversary? It shows EA has put as much effort and quality into this as anything they have for years now, meaning nothing.”
Multiple users are also complaining about consistent crashes. If enough players are experiencing this, we’ll have to see if an update is rolled out to address the problem.
The Sims Legacy Collection is faring much better, with mostly positive reviews at the time of writing.
Of course, there are plenty of positive reviews too. Some say that the game is running just fine for them, and are thankful for the fixes that make it run well on modern PCs. Others are also pleased that the EA App isn’t required to play it via Steam. Perhaps most significantly, many are just happy to be playing The Sims 2 again, especially if they’re burnt out on The Sims 4.
