According to rumors, Season 3 has been green lit, and, thus, should start production soon. The information comes from Sugoi LITE, an X (formerly Twitter) account focused on backstage information and leaks, so there is a good chance that this is legit news.
If the rumors are correct, the third season is likely to be confirmed right after Season 2’s finale airs.
Fan Reaction to the Rumors
As soon as the news was out, a few fans expressed concerns that there might not be enough content to adapt in an eventual Season 3.
There are a few possibilities in this case: so far, all seasons have aired 25 episodes each, but the third season could be shorter. Another possibility is that the season can be confirmed, but air only in 2026 or further. Finally, as these are probably leaks with partial information, it might not be exactly a new season, but a sequel in another format, like a movie.
Despite this concern, the majority of them seem to be happy, as the quality of the animation has been great, and there are no reasons to think Studio C2C will downgrade it in upcoming sequels.
What Is Shangri-La Frontier About?
Shangri-La Frontier is originally a novel series self-published online by Katarina (likely a pen name) on Shosetsuka ni Narou – it has been serialized since 2017.
Kodansha acquired the rights to publish a manga adaptation, which has been running weekly in Shonen Magazine since 2020, adapted by Ryosuke Fuji. So far, 20 volumes has been released in Japan.
The plot takes place in the near future, when VR games have gone mainstream. What we consider today as “regular games” (the non-VR ones) are now old, “retro games”. As the VR-gaming industry develops, many “trash games” – full of bugs and bad systems – are released, and Rakuro Hizutome loves them. He always adopts the same nickname, Sunraku.
In this setting, Hizutome buys a game called “Shangri-La Frontier”, in which his skills as a “trash gamer” help him to progress.
Shangri-La Frontier is available to stream on Crunchyroll, subbed and dubbed.
