Summary

  • After 14 years, Fallout: New Vegas lead writer John Gonzalez has returned to Obsidian Entertainment as a creative director on an undisclosed project.
  • Before you get your hopes up, Gonzalez was quick to claim that he hasn’t been brought on to work on a Fallout: New Vegas sequel.

Despite turning 15 years old this year, most Fallout fans will probably tell you that Fallout: New Vegas is the peak of the series. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment rather than Bethesda, it has a well-deserved reputation for being the best game in the Fallout series, thanks to its incredible storytelling, vibrant and brutal setting, and immaculate side quests.

The wasteland should be terrifying, not a sandbox for our power fantasy.

One of the people responsible for Fallout: New Vegas’ success is lead writer John Gonzalez, who ended up leaving Obsidian back in 2011, shortly after the game’s release. Gonzalez not only helped design the main quest of Fallout: New Vegas, but wrote most of the dialogue, invented iconic characters like Mr. House, Benny, and Yes-Man, and wrote some of the game’s best side quests, including Come Fly With Me.

Now, a whopping 14 years after leaving Obsidian behind, Gonzalez has revealed via his LinkedIn page that he’s returning to the studio as a creative director, which is an announcement that will have immediately sent a wave of excitement down the spine of every single Fallout fan on the planet.

No, He’s Not Working On Fallout: New Vegas 2

The Courier stood in front of the wall to New Vegas in Fallout New Vegas.

Unfortunately, Gonzalez was extremely quick to shoot down any hopes that he’d been brought back on for a Fallout: New Vegas sequel, going so far as to include a little nod to excited fans in the experience section of his LinkedIn profile. In this section, Gonzalez simply states that he’s back at Obsidian for “exciting times” before quickly following that up with “No, it’s not FNV2”.

So, if he isn’t working on Fallout, then what is he working on? We know it’s not Avowed, as that would be very odd considering the game is only a few weeks from release, and it’s probably not The Outer Worlds 2 since that’s supposedly launching this year. Given that Gonzalez hasn’t revealed what he’s working on, it’s most likely a yet unannounced project.

Obsidian has expressed a desire to return to Pillars of Eternity under the right conditions, whether it be a tactic-style spinoff or just a third game in the series. It could also be a smaller project like Pentiment or Grounded. We won’t be able to tell what exactly he’s been brought in to work on until Obsidian itself tells us, though I’m sure many out there have their fingers crossed it’s something Fallout-related.
