Huge Baldur’s Gate 3 Custom Campaign Mod To Add ‘Six-To-Eight’ New Companions

An upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 mod is set to add between “six-to-eight” new companions to the game, expanding the selection of characters in Larian’s RPG. The Baldur’s Gate 3 mod is called Path to Menzobarranzan, and will eventually bring an entirely new custom campaign to the game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 modding has been massive since launch, with gamers taking any opportunity to add even more new content to one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2023. The scene took a massive leap forward in September 2024, with the release of Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Patch 7. This update saw the arrival of official modding tools, which talented creators have been able to use to make more impressive mods than ever. With larger-scale mods, it will likely be a while longer yet before the benefits of the modding tools come to fruition, which is an exciting prospect.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Path to Menzobarranzan lead writer Thomas Loughlin confirmed that the upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 mod has plans to add “around six-to-eight completely unique and original custom companions,” each one with their own voice actor. He described this decision as “obvious” when creating a custom campaign, stating, “There are mods that just add companions, but custom companions with companions? Yeah, this is the first one.” They aren’t just humanoids, either. “We have a version of Scratch… we’ve got a couple…He [mod developer Lotrich] prefers one, I prefer another one, but they’re pretty cool.” Loughlin claimed.

The companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 are commonly seen as one of the game’s biggest strengths. Each character has their own unique story with different endings, as well as personal quests for players to complete. In this regard, Path to Menzobarranzan has an awful lot to live up to, and the ambition to try it must be applauded.

The end of an era for Baldur’s Gate 3 is just around the corner. Larian still hasn’t announced the release date for Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Patch 8, but when it does launch, it will mark the end of large updates to the game. With Photo Mode, cross-play, and 12 new subclasses on the way, it’s set to be a big one, and select players can already take part in the Patch 8 stress test. After this, Larian will be fully focused on its upcoming projects, of which the studio is not yet ready to discuss.
