GTA 6 Could Be Borrowing One of Red Dead Redemption's Best Features

Summary

  • GTA 6 could feature a hunting mechanic akin to RDR2.
  • Even without a full-fledged hunting system, the game seems likely to offer more varied wildlife than any prior entry in the franchise.
  • GTA 5 already offered a hunting activity, albeit in a limited capacity.

Grand Theft Auto 6 might feature a hunting mechanic, according to some recently surfaced job listings reviewed by Game Rant. Even if the game doesn’t incorporate a full-fledged hunting system in the vein of Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA 6 still seems likely to put a greater focus on animals than any prior entry in the franchise.

Rockstar has yet to share any new details about its much-anticipated title since premiering the GTA 6 reveal trailer in early December 2023. And while this period of radio silence continues, the company’s job listings have occasionally offered some hints as to the game’s feature set.

Rumor: GTA 6 Editions Info Shared by Rockstar Leaker

A well-known leaker shares some new information about GTA 6 editions, which will supposedly mark a departure from Rockstar’s typical release strategy.

In yet another example of this trend, Rockstar recently started advertising multiple openings for artists of various seniority levels. Some of these listings, reviewed by Game Rant, explicitly mention creature design and animal model rigging under the list of the advertised roles’ responsibilities. One of them also suggests that Rockstar currently has at least one stateside team that’s entirely dedicated to creature design. While this team likely had its hands full making Red Dead Redemption 2‘s animals, the fact that it hasn’t been disbanded and reassigned suggests that GTA 6 could also place a big focus on wildlife—whether by offering more varied fauna or incorporating RDR2‘s hunting mechanics.

GTA 5 Already Introduced Hunting in a Limited Capacity

A hunting system wouldn’t be an entirely unprecedented addition to the Grand Theft Auto series. Players were already able to partake in such an activity by speaking to Cletus Ewing while controlling Trevor in GTA 5. However, the 2013 game features a basic hunting system, limited to a handful of animals, including deer, coyotes, and birds. In contrast, Red Dead Redemption 2 boasts over 170 animal species and its hunting mechanics are fairly widely regarded as one of its best features. The fact that Rockstar still has at least one internal team solely dedicated to creature design suggests that GTA 6 could offer similarly varied wildlife, thus having much livelier fauna than any prior series installment.

The GTA 6 reveal trailer features several types of Florida-native animals, including seagulls, flamingos, and a singular alligator. GTA 5 also had dogs, cougars, and lions, all of which are found in the real-world Sunshine State that inspired the state of Leonida, the home of Vice City.

GTA 6 is still officially targeting a 2025 launch, but has yet to be given a release date. Whether the game remains on track to hit the market this year should become clear on February 6, when Take-Two Interactive will share its next quarterly report and publish financial guidance for its next fiscal year, which begins on April 1.
