Mobile Suit Gundam, Evangelion and Hideaki Anno fans may have reasons to look forward to April – good news about Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX (“G-Quacks”) is likely coming!

GQuuuuuuX is the latest installment in the franchise, and it’s the first Gundam series produced by Studio Khara, the studio that currently owns the rights to the Evangelion series and also the studio that produced the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy.

According to Japanese accounts on social media, during a radio program titled MAGIC JAM that aired on January 29, it was revelaed that GQuuuuuuX will debut in April 2025. Furthermore, Tomoyo Kurosawa, who voices Yuzuriha Amate/Machu in the new series, seemingly hinted at an April debut, but later deleted her post:

GQuuuuuuX Production Team

This series is written by Hideaki Anno, creator of Evangelion, and Yoji Enokido, who served as the head writer for Sailor Moon SuperS. The series is directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki (co-director of The End of Evangelion and Rebuild of Evangelion) – most of the main staff previously worked at the now defunct Studio Gainax.

Despite Anno’s involvement as both a writer and Khara’s president, Tsurumaki is reportedly avoiding showing him the development of the production, to prevent being overruled – at least according to the mechanical designer, Ikuto Yamashita. Tsurumaki teased that he had put some “fan service” for Evangelion fans in the series.

In April 2025, the life-size Gundam that could be seen at the now closed Yokohama Gundam Factory will be at the Gundam Pavilion during the Osaka Expo 2025 (from April to October), which might be related to the marketing campaign for the new series.

Gundam GQuuuuuuX Prologue Movie

A prologue titled Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- has been screening in Japan since January 17 – it topped the box office in the last two weeks, earning over 1.4 billion yen (around 9 million dollars), and is likely to keep ranking well in the upcoming weeks. GKIDS has already confirmed to screen the movie in North America starting February 28, 2025. Beginning is a re-edited version of the first four episodes of the series.

It has been rumored that the story is a “what if” timeline for Gundam 0079, the first series of the franchise. It is set in a colony in outer space – colonies appear most frequently in the Universal Century timeline.

In the plot, Yuzuriha is a regular school girl, but one day she meets the war refugee Nyaan. They join illegal fights between mobile suits, the Clan Battles – Yuzuriha uses the name Machu in those fights, and she pilots the GQuuuuuuX. But things go wrong when the police start hunting them.

As the movie will screen internationally, it seems likely the series will also be available to overseas audiences. However, so far, no streaming service has confirmed that it will air the series.

While no official release window for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX has been announced, rumors (and potential leaks) tease an April 2025 release. There is no information about the episode count of the series.
