In a recent YouTube video from The Rough Cut, Wicked editor Myron Kerstein shared the editing sequence of “Defying Gravity,” the film’s climax song. Within the complex arrangement of visuals, music, and voices, one particular Fortnite sound effect called “All Skydiving Fly Sounds (Fortnite)” can be clearly discerned. The sound is used when Elphaba is falling from a tower while trying to fly with her broom. Fortnite fans might recognize the mentioned sound effect from when players jump from the Battle Bus and skydive around before landing. Wicked‘s star Ariana Grande already has skins in Fortnite, but this connection between the film and the game comes as another surprise. It would seem developer Epic Games had previously released Fortnite‘s skydiving sound effect for royalty-free use, according to the YouTube channel Sound Library.
Fortnite’s Skydiving Sound Was Used in Wicked’s Defying Gravity
While Kerstein did not explicitly mention that the sound effect came from Fortnite, fans were quick to point it out in the video’s comment section. Fortnite is known for taking inspiration from movies like John Wick and Star Wars for skins and emotes, but this time it was the other way around. Like it did with Ariana Grande, the game has had multiple collaborations with famous musical artists. There are rumors that the next singer to appear in Fortnite Festival could be Sabrina Carpenter, but fans will have to wait for an official announcement from Epic Games.
The second part of Elphaba’s adventure will come with Wicked: For Good, which will hit screens on November 21, 2025. Meanwhile, Fortnite just launched its OG Season 2 with new cosmetics and secret quests. Fortnite players can purchase the Season 2 OG pass for 1,000 V-Bucks until March 25 and obtain up to 45 rewards.
