The DC universe has had a rocky few years in the gaming industry, but a Creature Commandos project could help bring some much-needed spice to the brand’s video game ambitions. In the past, developer Rocksteady impressed with its Arkham series, which brought gamers a thrillingly dark Batman saga. However, after Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights, the future of DC’s games is uncertain. As one of the newest DC adaptations, Creature Commandos could be the perfect franchise to reignite hype.
One of the biggest questions surrounding a Creature Commandos game, though, is how exactly it would play. In the James Gunn-created animated series, Amanda Waller returns to form a black ops group, except this time around, the team members are monsters. DC’s Creature Commandos is a charming spooky take on the Suicide Squad formula, but a game adaptation would want to sidestep Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League‘s formula. While a live-service approach seems like the most obvious route, there are other options that a hypothetical Creature Commandos game would want to consider first.

Learning From Gotham Knights’ Main Critiques
When it comes to Gotham Knights, the general concept behind the game seemed like the perfect fresh way to explore Gotham City. However, once the game launched, criticisms of repetitive gameplay and rough combat mechanics kept it from reaching its full potential. A game set in Gotham City that doesn’t feature Batman was risky enough, but it’s possible that it still could have succeeded if the gameplay was as fine-tuned and interesting as the Arkham series. A Creature Commandos game could still look to Gotham Knights for inspiration, though.
Gotham Knights choosing to feature four playable protagonists held a lot of promise. If a Creature Commandos game was ever developed, it would likely choose the multiple playable characters route, too. Developers could learn from Gotham Knights‘ mistakes and bring players a much more smooth and satisfying combat system that makes the characters of Creature Commandos feel dynamic, helping side-step a repetitive loop.
In Gotham Knights, the four playable characters are Robin, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Nightwing.
Warner Bros. Should Steer Clear of Suicide Squad’s Live-Service Approach
Right now, the desire for live-service games appears to be quickly evaporating. Although Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was part of the beloved Arkhamverse, the realization that the game would be live-service disappointed a lot of longtime fans of the series who were hoping for a similar formula to the Arkham games. After Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League‘s lackluster performance, it would be unwise for Warner Bros. to take the same approach with Creature Commandos.
A Creature Commandos Game Can Blend the Arkhamverse’s Darkness With Suicide Squad’s Levity
One of the main qualities that kept the Arkham games so compelling was its unapologetically dark, and sometimes borderline horror-tinged, atmosphere. With Suicide Squad, chaotic humor has helped not only the game, but the franchise as a whole, resonate with fans. Creature Commandos‘ fun blend of monster-focused moral complexity and humor could potentially be the perfect way to balance these two styles into one story.
James Gunn’s Creature Commandos animated series is considered the beginning of the new DCU. However, the show does have connections to Gunn’s Suicide Squad movie.
As of Now, a Creature Commandos Game Seems Unlikely
A Creature Commandos game has a lot of potential to be a unique DC project, but it may not ever come to fruition. While the prospect of playing as G.I. Robot and Bride of Frankenstein is intriguing, DC’s next move within the gaming industry is a mystery right now. This is just speculation, but after Suicide Squad‘s performance, DC may look to move away from team-based game adaptations.
