Despite some speculation to the contrary, “Nintendo Switch 2” seems to be the final name of the console after all. True to its name, the Switch 2’s role as a sequel is made most clear through its striking resemblance to its predecessor. In fact, the similarities and differences in the Nintendo Switch 2’s hardware were the clear focus of its reveal.
The Switch 2 is larger than the original, which is most likely intended to bolster the power of the console. The Nintendo Switch 2’s Joy Cons feature a few remarkable differences, but seemingly share the same function as before. The reveal was brief enough to not include time for any other major details. By contrast, a Nintendo Direct will have the time to dive into everything that this trailer did not.
The Nintendo Switch 2’s April Direct Could Resemble its Predecessor
Other than a brief tease at a potential new Mario Kart game, game reveals were notably absent from the first Switch 2 trailer. This alone would make one think that the April Direct will showcase more of the upcoming console’s library. More importantly, the original Nintendo Switch’s presentation was chock-full of information about titles coming at launch and beyond.
This is the first way in which the Nintendo Switch 2 presentation will likely mirror its predecessor. Nintendo Switch 2 launch titles will probably be of particular interest, as they are often a huge selling point of any new console. The Nintendo Switch presentation covered major titles like Splatoon 2 and Mario Odyssey, so there should be nothing stopping the Switch 2 from doing the same.
The other biggest focuses of the 2017 presentation were the newly created Nintendo Switch Online service, alongside basic hardware functions. Fortunately for its developers, the Nintendo Switch 2 has its bases covered on both of these fronts. The presentation could reveal a new console coming to the library of NSO, but that won’t need to be as extensive as its debut was.
Furthermore, the hardware segment won’t need to spend as much time as the original did in explaining concepts like the Joy Cons or Handheld Mode. Instead, the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct can spend its hardware discussion elaborating on the important differences that were already revealed or teased within its first trailer.
