The Original Quincy Royal Guards, Explained

The Quincy Royal Guards are the elite Sternritters who personally accompany Emperor Yhwach in his battle against the Shinigami in Bleach Thousand-Year Blood War. Fans are very familiar with the current generation of Royal Guards, consisting of Sternritter X—Lille Barro, Sternritter M—Gerard Valkyrie, Sternritter C—Pernida Parnkgjas, and the newest member, Sternritter D—Askin Nakk Le Vaar.

However, the first generation of Royal Guards was mostly unknown until the Bleach TYBW anime. Here’s all there is to know about the first-ever generation of Quincy Royal Guards that served Yhwach during the age of the Licht Reich until their fearsome war against the original Gotei 13.

A Cruel and Callous Squad

The Quincy Royal Guards were originally called the Schutztaffel in the Manga, a name mentioned by Uryuu Ishida and Askin Nakk Le Vaar. However, this seems to have been changed in the anime version, most likely because of the name’s ties to the Third Reich in World War II. The elite squad has always been referred to as the Royal Guards in the anime, Shin’eitai in Japanese.

At this point, during the age of the Licht Reich, the Royal Guards were not given a Schrift like the current generation. Instead, they merely battled using their Spirit Weapons and Heilig Pfeil. This means that these Quincy although much more powerful than the norm, were much behind the current generation in terms of power.

Here are the four members of the first Royal Guards that served in the Licht Reich:

Johann Seydlitz

Seydlitz was a middle-aged man with a formal and dignified presence. He had white hair carefully groomed and a short mustache. He had an eyepatch in his left eye. Seydlitz was close and incredibly loyal to Yhwach. He talked with him about the formation of a new army with the purpose of conquering the Soul Society, the Sternritter.

Seydlitz was present along with the other three members of the Royal Guard during Yhwach’s meeting with Ichibe Hyosube. He stood silently while the two leaders discussed possible peace negotiations. He was later killed during the war with the Gotei 13, being incinerated alive by Captain Shigekuni Genryuusai Yamamoto’s Bankai: Zanka No Tachi. During Yamamoto’s battle with Royd Lloyd, Seidlitz was one of the corpses revived by Zanka No Tachi South.

Seydlitz Spirit Weapons were a pair of hand pistols. He shoots bullet-shaped Heilig Pfeil. This gives him a certain resemblance to Robert Accutrone, another pistol-wielding, middle-aged Quincy.

Hubert Alexander Kleich

Hubert was a younger man with a somewhat feminine face, thin eyebrows, and carefully groomed black hair similar to Seydlitz. He was seen to be generally calm and focused, but with a temper when confronted by people he deemed beneath him. He was deeply condescending and arrogant to others. However, he respected and revered Yhwach almost like a Zealot.

Hubert was the vice-captain of the Sternritter, being second to Jugram Haschwalth after he was admitted into the Sternritter and became Yhwach’s right-hand man. This visibly annoyed Hubert, who deemed Jugram inferior. Hubert was also killed by Yamamoto’s Zanka no Tachi, as he was revived by the Bankai during the battle with Royd Lloyd.

Hubert wielded a medium-length sword, similar to Jugram Haschwalth. He didn’t use Reishi-based weapons like his teammates.

Algora Lallau

Algora was a massive man with pronounced facial features and light hair. He was particularly larger and physically stronger than his peers, giving him the visage of a Quincy brute. There is very little known of his personality, only that he was loyal to Yhwach and his teammates as he was seen protecting them from Ichibe Hyosube. Algora was also killed by Yamamoto at some point, later revived during the fight with Royd Lloyd. Algora used a pair of twin axes as his Spirit Weapons.

Nikita Deslok

Nikita is the most mysterious member of the team, as she was created by Tite Kubo for the anime, she did not appear in the manga. Nikita was one of the very few members of the Licht Reich, similar to the Bambies in the current generation of Sternritter. Nikita was a very short young woman with blonde hair styled in a ponytail. She wore a military cap and a military skirt.

Nikita was stoic and expressionless, as seen when she callously executed the inhabitants of Bazz-B’s village, including Bazz’s mother, who she shot in the head in front of the boy. Nikita was first seen during the meeting between Yhwach and Ichibe when she shot her Heilig Pfeil at Ichibe when the negotiations fell through.

Nikita’s Spirit Weapon was a short rifle with a musket attached. She used it to kill her enemies from afar. It is unknown how Nikita and Seydlitz wielded firearms at such a time period before they were invented.

These are the first members of the Royal Guard, Johann Seydlitz, Hubert Alexander Kleich, Algora Lallau, and Nikita Deslok. They served in the Licht Reich until they were all killed during the war with the Gotei 13.
