Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 just launched on Steam, but its “rough” performance and issues with frequent crashes have resulted in it receiving a “Mixed” review score.
Although PlayStation and Insomniac Games once claimed that Marvel’s Spider-Man would never be playable unless it was on a PS4, the time of exclusives is quickly changing. Similarly to how Xbox has been throwing its previously first-party games to every other console, PlayStation has been porting a bunch of its biggest titles over to PC over the last few years.

Spider-Man doesn’t need a CEO to mentor him, Uncle Ben is more than enough.
That includes Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, with the first game and Miles Morales midquel having recently hit Steam. That trend has just continued with the release of Spider-Man 2, which launched just a few days ago. What should be an exciting time for Spider-Man fans, though, has turned out to be a bit of a disappointment.
Spider-Man 2’s PC Launch Isn’t Off To A Strong Start
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 just launched on Steam yesterday, but it’s been a pretty rocky start for the port. As of the time of writing, Spider-Man 2 currently has a “Mixed” review score from over 1,700 reviews, with many of the complaints levied at the poor optimisation and number of crashes and performance issues.
The highest-rated review on the Steam page right now comes from user Lumi Kløvstad, who recommends that players hold off on buying the game right now until more stabilisation patches come out. They note that the lighting doesn’t load in some cutscenes, that the frame-rate constantly dives during certain scenes, and that there are issues with desyncing audio and stuttering.
Lighting doesn’t load in some cutscenes, those same scenes run at seconds-per-frame, audio desync issues up the wazoo, freezing, stuttering, and just about every other performance issue I can think of.
Strangely, it seems that, while the performance issues are hitting a lot of players, they aren’t quite universal. A lot of the positive reviews say that they’ve had no issues with the game so far, suggesting that the optimisation is the real issue for a lot of players. Either way, it’s clear that most aren’t happy with its current state.
Although Spider-Man 2 was very impressive for how it took advantage of the PS5’s hardware, it is a little strange to see it in such a rough position at launch considering how well the other PlayStation ports have been received. Here’s hoping that some fixes come to the game quickly.
