This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf arc.

Summary

  • The Sun God Nika existed long before the Void Century, fighting in the First World.
  • The Earth God and the Serpent of Infernal Flames engulfed the world in flames and darkness.
  • The Forest God sent forth demons, while the Sea God’s rage followed the death of the Sun God.

The Elbaf arc of One Piece is quite easily the most lore-heavy of all the arcs of the series, and it goes without saying that Oda isn’t done with the massive lore reveals of this arc just yet. In One Piece chapter 1138, Oda went on to reveal some massive bits of information, thanks to Franky witnessing the giant mural in the Adam Tree and Robin translating the Harley texts after being given the book by none other than Saul.

While there is a ton of information to digest here, clearly the most important bit here is the existence of multiple Gods which eas finally confirmed by Oda himself. Now, 4 confirmed Gods exist in the One Piece world, and they’re all going to add great depth to the series in one war or another.

The Existence Of The Sun God — Creation And Reincarnation

  • The Sun God Was Born Long Before The Void Century
  • The Sun God Fought In The First World

The existence of multiple Gods in the world of One Piece isn’t anything that should surprise the fans. After all, the most important lore arc in the story, Skypiea, revealed to the fans that these Gods exist. During the Noland flashback, it was made quite clear that the God of the Sun exists, as did the God of the Rain, the God of the Forest, and the God of the Earth. In the Harley texts, most of these Gods have now officially been confirmed.

As far as the Sun God goes, fans knew that this God existed long ago. The existence of the Sun God was confirmed in Wano, where Luffy awakened his Devil Fruit. Sun God Nika was thus reborn, and it was clearly implied that Joy Boy, who existed long ago in the Void Century, held the same powers as him. But, Elbaf took things one step further and revealed to the fans that the world of One Piece had been destroyed twice already, and both times, the name of the Sun God Nika was invoked. This clearly meant that the Nika who existed before Joy Boy was actually real and not just a myth, and that he fought a mysterious enemy long ago. In One Piece chapter 1138, fans finally got an answer to how this God came to be. It is said that long ago, the world was covered in flames, and these flames are likely what were used to create an infinite power source. Mankind grew greedy and touched the sun, taking power for themselves and ruling as the sovereign. Of course, the undying flame needed manpower to be turned into energy and this, people were enslaved. These slaves were forced to work, and it was at this point that they prayed for the Sun God’s aid.

According to the mural in Elbaf, the Sun God came from the sky in Ark Maxim to heed the call of the slaves, laughing and fighting. This is precisely why slaves always call out to the Sun God in times of need. Nika’s arrival, however, sparked the wrath of a God, who then went on to turn the world upside down.

The Other Three Gods Of The One Piece World

The Harley Explains The Existence Of Other Gods

The Earth God And The Serpent Of Infernal Flames

Flames engulfed the land, and humans succumbed to their desires, touching the forbidden Sun. The enslaved prayed, and the Sun God appeared. The Earth God was enraged, and together with the serpent of infernal flames, shrouded the world in death and darkness. They would never meet again.

Upon the arrival of the Sun God, the Harley clearly states that the Earth God was enraged. This God then joined forces with the serpent of infernal flames and together, they fought the Sun God Nika. This battle led to the destruction of the world, and caused countless deaths, likely leaving only a few people behind who could then restart society. The Earth God is implied to be Imu, but fans also know that Imu was one of the 20 Kings long ago, which means that Imu might have inherited the power of the Earth God, just as Luffy had inherited the power of the Sun God.

The Forest God And His Army Of Demons

five elders transformation

Breath stirred within the void, and the Forest God sent forth demons. The Sun did nothing but spread the fires of war. The people of the half-moon dreamed, the people of the full-moon dreamed. Humans slew the Sun and became Gods, and the Sea God raged. They Would never meet again.

One Piece: Oda Just Confirmed The Story Won’t End Anytime Soon

The One Piece series still has a long time to go. The Final Saga will take a few more years.

Many centuries later, life stirred once again, and it is likely that the survivors from the First World, who were likely very modern, were the people of the Ancient Kingdom who possessed very advanced technology, for obvious reasons. This is where Oda introduces the God of Forest, whose identity remains unknown right now. It is believed that the God of Forest sends forth demons, which suggests that the Devil Fruits were created by this God, or potentially demonic powers were bestowed to people, similar to how the Elders have been given devilish abilities by Imu. Oda needs to give further explanation as to who the Forest God was, and what Army of Demons they possessed. Could the Army of Demons simply be Devil Fruit users who fought on both sides? Or could it be Imu’s personal powerful fighters, such as the Elders, who have previously been called Demons? The likely answer is the second one. The half-moon people, likely the D, and the full-moon people, likely the winged races, were potentially the ones who created Devil Fruits using their dreams, and Joy Boy was born to fight once again.

The Sea God

Poseidon Shirahoshi from One Piece

It is said they humans slayed the Sun, which might be directly referring to the Sun God Nika, or the undying power source created by the Ancient Kingdom. If the Sun died, they would lose their forces, and it was also around this time that Joy Boy, who was the Sun God Nika, died and well. Following the death of Joy Boy, the Sea God raged. It is unclear who the Sea God is. If the Earth God is Imu, the Sea God could be a reference to Poseidon, the Mermaid Princess. Perhaps, she was the one responsible for Imu losing access to the Mother Flame and being forced to stay in the shadows forever.

If this interpretation of the Harley texts are correct then fans know three of the four Gods, with Luffy being the Sun God, Imu being the Earth God, and Shirahoshi potentially being the Sea God. The identity of the Forest God remains unknown, as does the identity of the Serpent of Infernal Flames (potentially what became the Red Line later). Perhaps, Oda will answer these questions later down the line.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus apps. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1138, is set to be February 2, 2025.
