- Some of the titles no longer launching on Netflix Games, will still be available on other platforms.
- Don’t Starve Together will still be releasing on mobile through Playdigious and Klei Entertainment.
- They recently removed Crashlands 2 from their release schedule and shut down their Southern California-based AAA studio, Team Blue.
Netflix Games has announced significant changes to its upcoming games lineup, leading to the cancellation of release plans for several previously announced titles. As part of this adjustment, six specific games, including Tales of the Shire, Don’t Starve Together, Compass Point: West, and others, will no longer be released on the platform. Their strategic shift is aimed at refining their game portfolio, prioritizing narrative-driven, party, and mainstream games tied to major IPs.
Netflix Games cancels the release of Don’t Starve Together, Tales of the Shire, and several others
Netflix Games is undergoing a strategic shift, leading to various changes in its gaming lineup over the past few months. Because of this, the highly anticipated titles, Don’t Starve Together, the standalone multiplayer expansion of the popular survival title, Don’t Starve, and Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game, the latest single-player life simulation based on the popular The Lord of The Rings IP will no longer be released via the Netflix platform. Tales of the Shire’s official website has now removed the Netflix Games logo, confirming its removal from the platform.
The good news for Don’t Starve Together, which was announced back in June 2024, is that it is still going to be released on mobile, with Playdigious continuing to work with Klei Entertainment to bring the game to mobile platforms. While there is no official release date announced yet, the game is expected to launch via Google Play Store and App Store.
Netflix confirms decision to adjust its gaming portfolio, leading to several game cancellations
Additionally, other titles such as Compass Point: West by Next Games, Lab Rat, and Rotwood by Klei Entertainment, and Thirsty Suitors by Outerloop Games have also been canceled, originally being planned and announced as Netlfix Games’ exclusive mobile releases.
However, this isn’t very surprising, as Netflix has previously canceled games after announcing them. For instance, Crashlands 2, the open-world crafting RPG also got similar treatment and was recently removed from the release schedule. Similar to Don’t Starve Together, Crashlands is set to launch on April 10, 2025, but without Netflix’s support and involvement.
It’s unclear what is going on behind the scenes, especially because they also shut down their Southern California-based AAA studio, Team Blue, without releasing a single game. The studio was established to develop a multi-platform AAA title featuring a brand-new original IP.
