  • The game’s player count has been on a steady rise, marking one of its best periods ever.
  • GTA 4, Vice City, and San Andreas – The Definitive Edition have also seen a resurgence in player numbers.

It’s been over a year since we had our last and only piece of Grand Theft Auto 6 information, the trailer that proved the game is set in Vice City and went on to break all kinds of YouTube records.

Since then, players have been so starved of news they’ve used the moon, historical records, Rockstar developer goodie bags, and YouTube playlist changes to try and predict when the next trailer would be dropping, to no avail.

Grand Theft Auto 5’s player count has steadily been rising since October. According to Steam Charts, the title had an average concurrent player count of 91,560 in October, 100,381 in November, 123,261 in December, and 128,587 over the last 30 days in January. This represents a 40 percent increase in players on Steam over the last four months.

While 40 percent is impressive on its own, the last 30 days have represented one of GTA 5’s best-ever periods on Steam. Its average of 128,587 is the fifth-highest the game has ever seen, with only December 2023 (145,070), May 2020 (141,369), February 2020 (142,724), and its launch month of April 2015 (192,714) having higher.

GTA 5 isn’t the only game in the series seeing a resurgence either. Grand Theft Auto 4 has seen a 74 percent increase in players over the last two months, with its average player count of 3,060 only bettered twice since it launched on Steam in July 2012.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition also notched up its highest-ever peak player count on January 26, as did Vice City – The Definitive Edition.

The people are clearly yearning for Grand Theft Auto, but who knows when they’ll get it?
