Over the years, media with queer characters and storylines have slowly become more mainstream. Of course, there’s still plenty of work to be done about properly representing the LGBTQ community, but many can now see themselves in their favorite characters. From TV series to movies, it’s so important to showcase these queer storylines, and video games are no different.

I Was A Teenage Exocolonist
In I Was A Teenage Exocolonist, you are part of humanity’s first space colony, where you can explore your new world, Vertumna, and experience both beauty and danger. But be warned. Every choice you make will affect the lives of your friends and the entire colony directly.
This beautifully animated game allows you to customize your character with not only different hairstyles and features, but it treats the concept of gender with so much care compared to many character customizations. Not only can you customize your gender expansively, but it has the added bonus of being able to romance the other characters in your colony regardless of gender, or you can choose to have no romantic interactions at all.

Wylde Flowers
If you’ve ever wanted to play a cozy game where you are a witch with a farm, now’s your chance. In Wylde Flowers you play as Tara, a certified cottage core bisexual who moves away to Fairhaven to care for her ailing grandmother. As you go through your days being a farmer by day and a witch by night, you get the option of romancing the townsfolk.
There are seven romance options in the game and while four of them identify as male, there are three options that lead to some beautiful queer storylines. Two of the romance options, Amira and Giva, identify as women, but there is also a non-binary option with Kim, the local butcher.

Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator

Tell Me Why
The Life Is Strange series is beloved in the queer community for its various queer characters and storylines, but it’s actually DONTNOD’s Tell Me Why, which features some of the strongest queer storylines the studio has given us.
Tell Me Why looks and feels like a Life Is Strange title but is entirely separate, and not part of the same universe. It simply uses multiple endings and meaningful choices in the same way to tell accurate queer stories.
In Tell Me Why, twin siblings must use their supernatural bond to slowly uncover their past, which reveals that one character, Tyler, is actually trans. The story is a little hard to get through at times due to Tyler’s past, but there are beautiful moments of pure, trans joy that make the game worth it.

The Last Of Us II
When The Last Of Us was released, it transformed the zombie genre and captured the hearts of many. So, when a second game, The Last of Us Part 2, was announced seven years after the original, fans were ecstatic to see that you could finally play as Ellie, a strong lesbian protagonist.
While the circumstances of how you get to play as Ellie are upsetting, you do get to see Ellie get smitten with her partner, Dina. And if that wasn’t enough, the game dives into gender identity within the apocalypse through Lev’s storyline with Abby. Just be prepared to have tissues on hand for when the tears start to come.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the fourth installment in the Dragon Age series, also serving as a direct sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition. It has the beautiful quirks of the previous games, but it also has an added bonus of allowing you to customize your character to be trans or nonbinary.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Mod Stops You From Failing Lucanis’ Romance
Lucanis is the only romance you can fumble through a story decision, so this mod lets you woo him no matter what.
While doing this doesn’t necessarily create a new storyline, making your character fall under these different options gives you some different voicelines about your identity. It’s also a nice bonus that inherently makes the storyline queer.

Prey
In Prey, you find yourself in 2032 on the space station Talos I, which has been orbiting the moon. You awake to find that an experiment has gone wrong. The station is now overrun with aliens, and you must navigate the terrifying terrain with nothing but your wits and the various weapons you find on the station.
But as you navigate your way through the chaos, you also uncover the various stories of those who are (possibly) still alive. One of those characters is Danielle Sho. In her side quest, you piece together her romance with her girlfriend and try to help Danielle get back to her. It’s a small side quest but unexpected and wholesome, which makes it very welcome.
3
The Outer Worlds
Another sci-fi option on the list, in Outer Worlds you wake up on a colony ship long after you were supposed to, only to realize that the colony has practically become a corporate dystopian nightmare. As you explore the new and strange world, you can talk to the various townspeople in the colony and gain companions.
One of them is Parvati Holcomb, somebody who is confirmed to be asexual. In one of the missions, you help Parvati go on a date with another woman companion from the hub. It’s really sweet queer sidequest which adds more depth and diversity to the main campaign.
2
Unsighted
If man and machine went to war and machines won, what would be left of the world? In Unighted, Arcadia is born after this scenario. Automations have prevailed, but something is off. Through the character of Alma, and Automation, you slowly realize that the essence that gives the machines sentience is running out, causing everybody to turn into mindless killing machines.
