Midnight Society, the studio founded by Dr Disrespect, has announced that it will be closing down. This comes only a few months after the studio announced that it would be making significant layoffs. The studio was started up by Guy “Dr Disrespect” Beahm and Robert Bowling in 2021.

After working on extraction shooter Deadrop for a while, the studio faced tremendous challenges as Beahm was accused of inappropriately messaging a minor on Twitch. Midnight Society cut ties with the streamer, but it seems that the damage was already done.

Midnight Society Announces It’s Shutting Down

The announcement was made on Twitter, which said, “Today we are announcing Midnight Society will be closing its doors after three incredible years, with an amazing team of over 55 developers contributing to our new IP Deadrop. We are actively seeking other game studios that would be interested in offering employment opportunities to our talented team members.

“If you know anyone who’s hiring please forward this message to them or DM us for direct intros. We express our sincere gratitude to each and every one of our community members and deeply sorry we were unable to reach our ultimate goal.”

A total of 55 developers find themselves without jobs, adding to the unfortunate industry-wide trend of layoffs. Meanwhile, Dr Disrespect’s YouTube monetization ban has been lifted by Google, proving once again that the video game industry is losing its soul.

During the initial round of “significant layoffs”, the studio said it “has faced multiple unexpected challenges in recent months. To adapt to these changes and secure the future of Midnight Society, Deadrop, and our commitment to providing innovative gaming experiences, we’ve made the tough decision to streamline our operations, which includes a significant workplace reduction.”

It seems we will no longer be seeing Deadrop, as the project will no doubt be disbanded along with the studio itself. At the time of the layoffs, Midnight Society mentioned that it was still on course to launch the game in 2025. Unless somebody else picks up where the studio left off, we’ve probably seen the last of the upcoming extraction shooter.
