With Baldur’s Gate 3 being a massive hit, even winning the Game of the Year award for 2024, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a sequel will eventually follow, which will likely be simply named Baldur’s Gate 4.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, there were some recurring characters that made their way from previous games, the biggest examples being Jaheira and Minsc, both of whom can even be recruited by the player as companions. With this in mind, it’s highly likely Baldur’s Gate 3 characters will also make their way into Baldur’s Gate 4. Here are some possible candidates that players should expect to see make a return in the sequel of this game.

Barcus Wroot

Barcus Wroot is a character that many players have met during their playthroughs of Baldur’s Gate 3, and he has quite the unfortunate life. Indeed, Barcus Wroot has a habit of getting into bad situations, where the player has to constantly come to his rescue throughout the game’s acts. He is first met in the Blighted Village, where he is stuck to a windmill, and then he gets enslaved in the Grymforge.

He has the option to become a camp follower for the player, and given how Deep Gnomes can live around two centuries, seeing this gnome getting himself in more trouble in Baldur’s Gate 4 wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Shadowheart

• First Met: During the Prologue. On the Nautiloid Ship.

Shadowheart is one of the most compelling characters in Baldur’s Gate 3, having one of the most interesting character arcs out there. She’s one of the first characters the player meets and has won over the hearts of many players, making her easily one of the most beloved characters in the game.

Being a Half-Elf means Shadowheart still has many years left, so her reappearance, even after 100 years, if such a significant time is needed, is fully possible. How she comes back and if she does would depend on which of her endings is chosen as canon. If she goes down the path of Dark Justicier, she could become another Viconia, making for an interesting antagonist. She could also take down the Selunite path, making her more akin to Jaheira.

Lae’zel

The Powerful Githyanki Warrior

• First Met: During the Prologue. On the Nautiloid Ship.

Lae’zel is also an origin character that the player can recruit as one of their team members in their playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3. In fact, she’s the very first companion the player meets during the prologue on the ship. The player can learn more about her throughout her companion questline, the Githyanki Warrior.

Lae’zel would be a great character to bring back in Baldur’s Gate 4, firstly because, in a way, she is immortal, thanks to the Astral Plane. That means that even if Baldur’s Gate 4 is set long after Baldur’s Gate 3, Lae’zel would still be alive. After turning her back on Vlaakith, she will be even more of an enjoyable character to adventure with.

Arabella

Arabella is undoubtedly one of the best candidates for returning characters to Baldur’s Gate 4. The player first meets her in BG3 during Act 1 where she is in danger from Kagha for trying to steal the Idol of Silvanus. The player can help her here and then complete her quest in Act 2 where the player has to find her parents.

Arabella is a young Tiefling who could be perfect as a companion for the player, depending on when Baldur’s Gate 4 takes place. Indeed, Tieflings don’t have the longest life span, being comparable to humans. But, if the game takes place even 40 years after BG3, she would still be a viable returning character.

Astarion

The Charismatic Vampire Elf

• First Met: In Act 1 in the Wilderness

For sure, Astarion is a character that needs to make a return in Baldur’s Gate 4 as he’s a beloved character that fans will surely be glad to see again. As one of the player’s possible companions, fans have spent hours with him, exploring his story in great depth.

Being an Elf means Astarion has a lot of years ahead of him, which means that he could make a comeback even if the game is set over 100 years after BG3. Depending on which of his endings is considered canon, he could come back as a new Cazador, which would make him an interesting antagonist to face.
