Yooka-Replaylee is set to mark the return of Shovel Knight from the original game, as revealed in a new trailer. An upcoming platformer developed by Playtonic Games, Yooka-Replaylee is the remastered version of 2017’s Yooka-Laylee.
Besides giving the open-world adventures of its playable duo, Yooka and Laylee, a shinier coat of paint with improved visuals, Yooka-Replaylee also adds to the original with many other changes, including better controls, new puzzles, and customization options. Fortunately for fans, Shovel Knight’s appearance as an NPC is among the things that have been retained in the remaster. First introduced in the titular 2D platform game released in 2014, Shovel Knight is a character created by Yacht Club Games. In Yooka-Laylee, he appears on multiple occasions during the game and gives tasks to the player. According to this recent confirmation, fans can gear up to meet the indie game hero once again in the remaster.

A fan of Yacht Club’s hit 8-bit style platformer Shovel Knight imagines what the game could have looked like if it was designed for the Nintendo 64.
In a newly released trailer, Yooka-Replaylee shared a look at the returning Shovel Knight while also revealing a glimpse of one of the quests given by the beloved character. The short clip focuses on the visually upgraded version of the popular character, from his iconic horned helmet and blue body armor to his multipurpose shovel. It shows an interaction between Shovel Knight and the Yooka-Laylee duo before revealing a 360-degree view of the Tribalstack Shrine, complete with its moving platforms, collectibles, and more. Moreover, the video also offers another glimpse of Yooka-Replayee‘s gameplay and shows the dual protagonists going from platform to platform as they try and make their way to the top of the structure.
Shovel Knight is Coming Back to Yooka-Replaylee with Some Enhancements
In an official post accompanying the trailer, Playtonic Games revealed that, similar to other aspects of Yooka-Replaylee, Shovel Knight’s return also comes with slight differences when compared to the original game. Apart from enhancing the fan-favorite character aesthetically, the devs have also made some changes to the tasks associated with the NPC. Without delving too deep, the announcement highlighted that the player will get a “newly revised challenge” from Shovel Knight in the forthcoming Yooka-Laylee remaster.
Apart from reprising his role in Yooka-Replaylee, Shovel Knight is set to feature in another project in the future. Back in June 2024, nearly a decade after Shovel Knight‘s release, Yacht Club Games announced that the development of a sequel was well underway, without sharing a release window. Given the remarkable success of the first game, the Shovel Knight sequel seems like something worth looking forward to, especially for fans of the genre.
