Generations are an essential aspect of One Piece. As characters in the series grow older, they often pass on both their will and strength to younger characters, in the hopes that the future generation will follow in their footsteps. This happens physically, with characters like Mihawk directly training Zoro to become an amazing swordsman of the future, or emotionally, with characters like Luffy being inspired by Roger’s will in One Piece to become the future Pirate King.
As it stands, many of the oldest generation of pirates have a character trying to follow in their footsteps, Roger has Luffy, Garp has Koby, and so on. However, one Marine who has trained and raised some very important characters in One Piece still doesn’t have a clear character to inherit his will. Sengoku, the former Fleet Admiral of the Navy, was an incredibly important part of the old generation, fighting alongside the likes of Garp and Roger. However, the question is: which character will follow in his footsteps and become the “Sengoku” of the modern generation?

The characters of One Piece are split into generational groups. The older generation consists of characters who were active before the Great Pirate Era and includes characters like Roger, Whitebeard, Garp, and Sengoku. The middle generation consists of characters who were active at the start of One Piece’s Great Pirate Era, many of which include those who were inspired by Roger’s words during his execution. This includes characters like Crocodile, Mihawk, Shanks, and Smoker. Finally, as many already know, the Worst Generation in One Piece is the newest group and consists of a group of incredibly strong pirates. However, other young characters like Koby have been grouped in this category.

In terms of raising the future generation, Sengoku trained and raised both a pirate from the middle generation and one from the Worst Generation. For the middle generation, Sengoku helped raise the brother of Doflamingo, Donquixote Rosinante, after the One Piece Dressrosa Arc villain had killed their father. Although Rosinante was killed later, Sengoku viewed the former Celestial Dragon as both a son and an amazing Marine. From the Worst Generation, at roughly the same time he lost Rosinante, Sengoku found a young X Drake, whose pirate family was eliminated on Minion Island, took him in, and enlisted him into the Marines.

From here, there may be a simple answer as to who would follow in Sengoku’s footsteps: X Drake. As the one who took in the young pirate and potentially raised him to be a Marine worthy of One Piece’s Worst Generation, X Drake may be well on his way to becoming an extremely important part of the Navy in the future of One Piece. This could potentially mean a future as either an Admiral or the Fleet Admiral itself as well.

At the same time, X Drake’s relationships with his fellow Marines also echo the relationships of the previous generation. Specifically, in the secret Marine team known as SWORD in One Piece, X Drake, a potential disciple of Sengoku, fights alongside a disciple of Garp, Koby, and a disciple of Tsuru, Kujaku. In the end, although there isn’t a lot of evidence to support it, it makes sense that the former Beast Pirate, X Drake, would follow in the footsteps of Sengoku. Although it would probably be Rosinante if he were still alive, X Drake is on track to become an extremely important member of the Navy. Fighting alongside both Garp’s and Tsuru’s disciples as well, X Drake is the best choice as the “Sengoku” of One Piece’s next generation.
