The Lost Crown Sales Numbers Revealed

The Associate Marketing Director at Ubisoft has recently revealed that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has sold over 1.3 million units. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was not considered a very successful game by Ubisoft, so it can be somewhat surprising for some people to see it selling over a million units.

Released early in 2024, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was the first entry in the Prince of Persia franchise in over a decade. While the game had a pretty good reception, receiving an average score of 87 on OpenCritic, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown allegedly failed to meet Ubisoft’s expectations, selling only around 300,000 units in its first two weeks after release.

Now, Ubisoft’s Associate Marketing Director, Alexandre Guenounou, has revealed on his LinkedIn profile that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has sold over 1.3 million units in one year. At first glance, these may seem like solid numbers, considering that The Lost Crown was one of the best Metroidvanias of 2024. However, it’s likely that they still failed to meet Ubisoft’s expectations, as the game’s budget and the company’s sales goals are still unknown.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Sold Over 1.3 Million Units

One of the unfortunate effects of the publisher’s disappointment with the title is that the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team was disbanded by Ubisoft late in 2024. While Ubisoft claimed at the time that the employees would be moved to other projects, the team at Ubisoft Montpellier was disbanded. Also, as a result of its commercial failure, it was suggested that The Lost Crown would not receive a sequel, which was merged into DLC for the title, “Mask of Darkness,” which was released in September 2024.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown’s financial issues apart, Ubisoft is currently in the middle of a big crisis, as the company is struggling to put out successful releases. Other games such as Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora have also failed to meet expectations, putting even more pressure on the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in March.

Earlier this week, Ubisoft announced that it was shutting down Ubisoft Leamington, while cutting staff from Ubisoft Dusseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm, and Ubisoft Reflections, laying off 185 employees. Other recent reports have indicated that Ubisoft and Tencent could be considering splitting the company instead of making it private, so it’s possible that even more layoffs may happen in the future.
