Silent Hill 2 was one of 2024’s most shocking surprises when it launched in October. Bloober Team’s remake of the classic horror experience was met with mixed opinions after the first few trailers, and due to Bloober Team’s somewhat patchy track record, many were worried that the new version wouldn’t live up to the 2001 original. But, in the end, it was a great game for newcomers and long-term fans alike. I loved it, and I recommend buying it while it’s at its cheapest price yet in the Fanatical Lunar Sale.
For those of you who have yet to play 2024’s best horror game, Silent Hill 2 takes you on an eerie trip to the eponymous, secluded town. You play as the iconic James Sunderland, who after grieving his wife’s death for a few years, suddenly gets a letter from her saying she’s in Silent Hill. As I’m sure you can guess, even although it’s weird and creepy, James heads out to investigate. Rather than a loving reunion with his wife, he finds himself coming face to face with nightmarish abominations in what has since cemented itself as one of the best PC games in recent years.
While the remake shares many similarities with the original Silent Hill 2, Bloober Team’s reimagining of the pacing and gameplay makes it a fresh and distinctive experience. Notably, 2024’s version of Silent Hill 2 offers modern Resident Evil-style combat, allowing you to immerse yourself in horrifying encounters with the town’s monsters. It’s still slow compared to most action games, but it’s a nice improvement that makes it more familiar for those who enjoy the Resident Evil remakes or Dead Space.
But where the Silent Hill 2 remake really shines is with the finer details. Puzzles are mind-bending yet engaging and the sound design helps you feel immersed in James’ disturbing surroundings. These are both things that Danielle Rose mentions in our Silent Hill 2 remake review, calling it a “solid, respectful reimagining of a horror classic.”
