The beginning of a new cycle is a big deal in a lot of different countries, and each year is symbolized by an individual animal. 2024 was the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac, and now the world is moving into the Year of the Snake. The Lunar New Year has played a role in some Pokemon games, so it’s only fitting to include it as part of a celebration.

On the Pokemon subreddit, a fan shared the impressive lucky red Lunar New Year envelopes their wife created. The red envelope looks exactly as one would expect of a standard Lunar New Year envelope, with the classic red and gold coloring. Ekans appears at the bottom of the envelope, with its mouth wide open and gold beams shooting out from behind it. The design looks like Ekans is letting out a loud hiss to welcome in the new year celebrating the Snake. These envelopes usually contain cash, and are given as a celebratory and good luck present for the coming year.
Pokemon and the Moon Have a History
While Ekans was chosen because of the theme of the year, it’s hardly the first time that Pokemon has been associated with the moon. In the games and anime, Pokemon like Clefairy have a special attachment to the moon, with Mt. Moon being a good place to find them. Some Pokemon can only evolve on the full moon, like Ursaring, while some require Moon Stones.
While Ekans doesn’t have any particular connection to the moon itself, it’s become a popular choice to celebrate the Year of the Snake, including from official sources. The Pokemon Center encouraged fans to check out Ekans plush toys for the new year, while the Pokemon is being highlighted in Pokemon GO‘s Lunar New Year celebration. Pokemon GO players that are particularly fond of Ekans should keep their eyes open, as standard Ekans will see an increased spawn rate, and Shiny Ekans will also be appearing in the wild more often.
