A rumor has begun swirling that MultiVersus‘ upcoming Season 5 may be its last. While there’s no confirmation from developer Player First Games or producer Warner Bros., one popular MultiVersus leaker is spreading the grim news that the future of the free-to-play fighting game may depend on its next season’s performance.
A Smash Bros.-style brawler featuring a wide variety of characters from across the Warner Bros. catalog of intellectual properties, MultiVersus hit open beta in 2022 before its full release in May 2024. The title saw instant success on Steam, and despite more recent reviews falling into a nearly 50-50 split, the game still sits at an all-time approval rating of 77 percent on the PC-based gaming platform.

WB Confirms Bad News About MultiVersus
During a recent financial call Warner Bros admits some bad news surrounding its free to play, brawler-style game, MultiVersus.
But according to Twitter user @AusilMVS, whose social media page is built largely around sharing leaks for MultiVersus, a reliable source has informed them that the game is on shaky legs, and that the coming season, slated to start on February 4, could be a “last-ditch effort” to keep the game alive. The leaker, who in the past has shared accurate information about upcoming characters, move sets, and other game-related information, has not named their source and stresses that the information is still a rumor that they cannot guarantee “without 1000% confirmation,” but a large portion of the community seems to find the rumor believable.
MultiVersus Season 5 Might Be a ‘Last-Ditch Effort’ to Save the Game
Despite its popularity in open beta and at launch, MultiVersus has had its share of struggles since then and is effectively already on its second life. MultiVersus lost nearly 100 percent of its players on Steam by February 2023, before it even hit its official launch. The game has also had its share of controversies, like having to recast the voice actors for the title characters of Rick and Morty following original actor Justin Roiland’s legal battles and allegations of inappropriate behavior.
Regardless of whether the rumor turns out to be true, Player First seems to be plowing ahead with Season 5. Though the developer has been tight-lipped regarding what players can expect to see shortly after the start of February, MultiVersus Season 5 character leaks have shown three new characters being added to the roster: Lola Bunny of Space Jam fame, DC superhero Aquaman, and The Wizard of Oz‘s Wicked Witch of the West. While all three of those characters have their fan bases, the last entry on that list could be the saving grace of Season 5, considering the popularity of the movie musical Wicked released in November 2024. Still, some players seem unimpressed with the roster additions.
