Monster Hunter Wilds Is Going To Be The Biggest Game Of 2025
Capcom’s blockbuster is already attracted hundreds of thousands of people. And that’s just the open beta…
Director Yuya Tokuda undoubtedly had to go through a number of proposals for new monsters before fixing on which ones would make it into Wilds. As you can imagine, there would be multiple criteria to judge a proposal by, overall design, technical feasibility, and fun factor included. He recently revealed which was his favourite monster proposal.
There Are Monsters, And Then There Are Nightmares
In a recent reveal with IGN (thanks PC Gamer), Capcom revealed the latest monstrosity from the Oilwell Basin region of the game. As the name suggests, Oilwell Basin is a region that’s covered with oil (don’t tell the USA) and is home to some of the most frightening monsters in the game. The latest nightmare revealed from the region is the Nu Udra, and it happens to be Tokuda’s favourite.
Dubbed The Black Flame, Nu Udra is a giant oil-covered octopus that’s also on fire – best of luck hunting it. Tokuda says the monster is not only brilliantly designed, but is also a technical achievement by the team.
“When we first implemented the movement of it going inside a hole, an animator told me, ‘When you weaken it and it starts heading back to its nest, please wait here for a moment!’ … They wanted me to see it going into its little hole, and I still remember replying, ‘Oh, that really is amazing!’ The animator looked so satisfied as well,” he revealed.
“When we saw the tests, we also thought to make it the apex predator of the Oilwell Basin,” he said, impressed by the creature design, and how well it replicated the behaviour of an octopus. “While there are countless proposals that I’ve had rejected due to technical reasons, it feels like I’m finally getting to attempt one of those this time around.”
He particularly mentioned one part where Nu Udra wraps itself around a pipe and said that nailing this animation was a great effort by the devs.
The unbridled force of nature runs wild and relentless, with environments transforming drastically from one moment to the next. This is a story of monsters and humans and their struggles to live in harmony in a world of duality.
Fulfill your duty as a Hunter by tracking and defeating powerful monsters and forging strong new weapons and armor from the materials you harvest from your hunt as you uncover the connection between the people of the Forbidden Lands and the locales they inhabit.
The ultimate hunting experience awaits you in Monster Hunter Wilds.
