Hideki Kamiya, the game director behind Okami, Bayonetta, and Devil May Cry, has recently confirmed all the games he’s directed co-exist in the same universe. Despite the art style of games differing wildly in Kamiya’s portfolio, like Okami‘s unique visuals, the action-adventure genre is a recurring element. Kamiya also directed Resident Evil 2, Viewtiful Joe, The Wonderful 101, and served as the creative director on Sol Cresta.

Kamiya kicked off his career with Capcom, working with the publisher’s subsidiary, Clover Studio, between 2004 and 2006. The professional later left Capcom studios to form PlatinumGames with other former staff members in 2006, serving as vice president between 2017 and 2023. Kamiya explained why he left PlatinumGames to follow his creative direction, while the publisher took a different route, and just last year he formed the independent studio Clovers Inc. to tackle the Okami sequel.

After Okami 2, Capcom Should Follow Through on Viewtiful Joe 3

With Hideki Kamiya returning to direct Okami 2 as Capcom revives old IPs, the two shouldn’t waste the opportunity to finally deliver Viewtiful Joe 3.

On the director’s YouTube channel, Kamiya posted a video responding to questions from fans about his catalog of projects, both past and future. Kamiya launched his own YouTube channel back in 2023, to keep fans updated on his projects after leaving PlatinumGames. One query addressed Bayonetta and Devil May Cry existing in the same universe because of Easter eggs in each game, and Kamiya casually responded, “All the games I create exist in the same single universe: the Kamiya-verse.” Additionally, Kamiya specifically confirmed Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and The Wonderful 101 are all part of the same universe, and he concluded with words of encouragement for fans, saying “Everything is interconnected, so please let your imaginations run wild.”

Hideki Kamiya Confirms His Games Exist in the Same Universe

Fans responded on YouTube, saying it made a lot of sense for the director’s games to take place in the same universe, because of their fairytale elements and recurring themes of good overthrowing evil to create a “reassuring” world. In other recent news concerning the director, Kamiya criticized Nintendo Switch 2 leakers, expressing his frustration towards the “shameful people” that also highlights the recurring issue of leaks in the industry.

An Okami sequel was announced to be in development at The Game Awards 2024, serving as one of the event’s most surprising announcements. Kamiya was confirmed to be returning to the IP, alongside Capcom and a revived Clover Studio, and the successor will also be retaining the cel-shaded art style and feature the return of the Celestial Brush. The sequel has no release date or window currently, but it’s expected to debut on the Switch 2 console and take advantage of its new and improved software.
