Garena has announced job openings for a Senior Associate in Esports Operation, based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, for their popular battle royale title, Free Fire. Although the game has been banned in the country for the past three years, the job listing’s mention of operating and organizing official tournaments, like EWC and FFWS qualifications, provide hope for the comeback of Free Fire to Bangladesh.
Free Fire’s possible comeback after a 3-year ban following a recent job posting
For those unaware, Fire Fire was banned by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) in August 2021 following the high court’s decision, citing concerns about its negative impact on youth. Initially intended as a 3-month ban, the restriction was extended and the game is still banned in the country.
However, Garena, the publisher of Free Fire, has recently posted job openings for a Senior Associate in Esports Operation in Dhaka, Bangladesh, raising speculation about the potential comeback of Free Fire in Bangladesh. The job description includes responsibilities of organizing and operating official Free Fire tournaments.
The EWC, FFWS pre-season, and other leagues are approaching soon
With the EWC scheduled from June 2025 to August 2025 in Riyadh and the FFWS pre-season leagues set to begin in February 2025, there is hope that the ban might lift soon, allowing Bangladeshi pro players to compete in these events. For now, an official confirmation about the unban is yet to be made.
Garena may hopefully be working on addressing the specific concerns about the game’s influence on the country’s youth. I hope the game is not only unbanned in Bangladesh but also relaunched in India, where its release was initially expected in September 2023 before being postponed and is still in the registration phase.
