Summary

  • Halo and Gears of War are reportedly coming to the PS5.
  • The Master Chief Collection and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition may be the first entries from their respective franchises to make their way to PlayStation.
  • Microsoft today announced that Forza Horizon 5 is coming to the PS5 in spring 2025.

Halo and Gears of War are coming to the PlayStation 5, an industry insider has said. With these two IPs, the PS5 would end up having access to some of the largest Xbox franchises in existence.

Microsoft started moving away from its long-term pursuit of console exclusives in early 2024, when it began porting some of its first-party games to third-party platforms, specifically the PS4, PS5, and the Nintendo Switch. Continuing this trend, the company has just announced that Forza Horizon 5 will be coming to the PS5.

Despite Microsoft’s Multiplatform Push, One Acclaimed Xbox Game Will Likely Stay Exclusive

Even though Microsoft is becoming a multiplatform publisher, there is one acclaimed Xbox exclusive that probably won’t get ported to other consoles.

The Forza series’ PlayStation debut may be followed by Halo and Gears of War, according to Microsoft insider Jez Corden, who said as much in a January 30 tweet. On the subject of Halo, Corden believes that The Master Chief Collection will be the first installment in the franchise to make its way to Sony’s ecosystem. This possibility was already raised by a mid-January 2025 report from serial leaker NateTheHate, who claimed that Halo: The Master Chief Collection is coming to both the PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2.

Many More Xbox Games Are Reportedly Going Multi-Platform in 2025

Many Xbox fans have long considered Halo and Forza to be two of Microsoft’s three flagship franchises, with the third one being Gears of War. Corden recently claimed that Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is on its way to the PS5 as well. Additionally, the insider identified Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 and Age of Mythology Retold as another two first-party Xbox games that he heard were being ported to Sony’s current-gen console. Meanwhile, NateTheHate recently reported that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is going multi-platform as well. All of these franchises are said to be coming to non-Xbox platforms sometime in 2025.

On January 29, Microsoft posted its consolidated financial report for the second quarter of fiscal year 2025. The move saw the company report a record number of Xbox Game Pass subscribers, while noting that its overall gaming revenue dropped 8% in constant currency during the three-month period ending December 31. Pivoting toward multi-platform game publishing is one way for the company’s gaming business to pursue a return to growth, especially as Xbox hardware sales continue to decline. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer repeatedly stated that no first-party franchise is off the table when it comes to deciding which IPs to bring to non-Xbox consoles next.
