The beauty of the Persona franchise is that each game offers different experiences, while making sure it enhances some familiar elements to keep the gameplay fresh. With Persona 6 almost certainly in development, there’s a lot of anticipation to see how it will up the ante after the massively successful Persona 5.
As of now, the next Persona title is still under wraps, but longtime fans have been speculating on Persona 6‘s possible setting, character tropes, and features that Atlus could improve. One such feature that the developer can revisit in the sixth installment is having a secondary currency for special items.

Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Merchant Archetype channels classic JRPG vibes with its creative uses for cash, and Persona 6 would be wise to copy it.
An Alternate Currency in Persona 6 Gives More Importance to Dungeon Exploration
Persona games put a lot of emphasis on dungeon exploration and combat, as they control characters to face off against dark entities in turn-based combat. Apart from upgrade materials and consumables, Persona 4 Golden made it possible for the protagonist to exchange the various items they picked up during their adventures for powerful weapons. All they need to do is visit the Shiroku Pub at night to access the unique arsenal of items that various characters can use in battle. The Persona 3 games feature a similar store in the form of an antique shop.
When Persona 5 first came out back in 2016, it didn’t adopt the secondary currency system right away, leaving players to spend their in-game Yen to purchase their stuff. Fortunately, Atlus brought it back in Persona 5 Royal with Jose’s Shop, which sells valuable items in exchange for flowers found in Mementos.
- Shiroku Pub in Persona 4 Golden: A store run by an old lady named Akihiko, which transforms into a pub at night. The protagonist can exchange stones at Shiroku Pub to get powerful equipment.
- Jose’s Shop in Persona 5 Royal: Located in random spots in Mementos, Jose’s Shop has various items, from potions to buff-based consumables, in exchange for flowers.
- Mayoido Antiques in Persona 3 Reload: Found in Paulownia Mall and known as Shinshoudo Antiques in previous editions. Players can trade gems for skill cards, combat items, and powerful equipment
When Persona 5 Royal reintroduced a secondary currency system, it was made clear that the feature is actually pretty invaluable. It gives players access to unique items that they otherwise won’t find in the regular weapons store and can’t pay for by merely working a part-time job. Plus, it makes exploration feel more immersive because it encourages players to check every nook and cranny for treasure chests and enemies to beat to get stones or flowers to exchange once they get out of the dungeon.
At this point, it seems inevitable for Persona 6 to have a secondary currency right off the bat to give players more incentive to explore and fight. It’s also possible that Persona 6 might follow in the footsteps of its last two predecessors, which both introduced special stores for secondary currencies in their respective expansions. However, the game could benefit if players were able to access the feature right away, as players can have a head start in terms of exploration and combat.
As for the store, it could be as unique as Shiroku Pub and Jose’s Shop. It could either be found in a lowkey location in the main city, or it appears randomly in dungeon explorations. Jose could even come back for Persona 6 in some way, just like how each Persona game introduces new Velvet Room attendants, but acting as a valuable-item shop owner for Persona 6‘s cast of characters.
What Leaks and Rumors Claim About Persona 6 So Far
Although Atlus is holding its cards close to its chest, many Persona 6 rumors claim that it’s coming out in 2025. It’s also said that it would be a semi-open world set in a high school, just like previous games. There’s also speculation that there might be dual protagonists, and many fans are hoping that the lead is female for a change. All these rumors should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism, but Persona 6 releasing in 2025 would definitely be a welcome surprise.
