Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 stock will suffer from “significant demand” that will inevitably lead to GPU shortages, according to the GPU maker. In news that will surprise absolutely nobody, RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 stock is expected to be so highly sought after that Nvidia has itself warned potential customers to expect “stock-outs” to occur.

The launch of these new Nvidia graphics cards is highly anticipated, but it’s expected to be a bumpy one. While the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are set to be the best graphics cards you can buy once they’re released on January 30, actually getting your hands on one might be difficult, with some gamers already camping outside brick-and-mortar stores for the chance to own one.

In a statement made in a post on its forums, Nvidia states that the company “expect significant demand for the GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 and believe stock-outs may happen.” The Nvidia spokesperson did go on to explain that both Nvidia and third-party manufacturers are “shipping more stock to retail every day” to deal with the high demand so that the GPU maker can “get GPUs into the hands of gamers.”

Unfortunately, the writing has been on the wall for some time that RTX 5090 stock might be tricky to get hold of. Earlier 5090 stock reports suggested that levels would be “very rare” on launch, while one major UK retailer confirmed it only had “single digit” 5090 stock availability ahead of the launch date.

Unfortunately, the lack of RTX 5080 stock might prove to be more painful for gamers looking for a more powerful GPU, but who don’t want to pay top dollar for the privilege. As our RTX 5080 review shows, performance for this GPU puts it ahead of everything but a 5090 and 4090. Meanwhile, with a $999 MSRP, the RTX 5080 is theoretically a more affordable option for gamers, even if RTX 5080 pricing is likely to be higher in reality due to the expense of making it.

While Nvidia is promising to continue to deliver more stock, it could be weeks, or even months, before the situation stabilizes. Expect scalpers to take advantage, too, with hugely inflated prices that make it even harder for normal gamers to pick up a new card, especially with existing RTX 4090 to 4070 stock running out fast.

If you’re thinking about picking up one of these new graphics cards, you’re going to need to be quick.
