James Gunn Has an Update on His Next DCU Project After Superman

James Gunn’s Superman movie is still months away from its theatrical release, but the DC Studios boss already has a big update on his next DCU film.

Like his comic book counterpart, Deadline‘s report on Thomsen joining the Lanterns cast described Sinestro as a former Green Lantern gone rogue and obsessed with his former protege, Hal Jordan. Of course, with Lanterns only having just started production, fans have yet to see what Thomsen’s Sinestro will look like. Fortunately, digital artist BossLogic unveiled a new image that imagines Thomsen with Sinstro’s signature magenta skin and yellow outfit. The Sinestro Corps logo can also be seen on his costume.

Pierre, Chandler, and Thomsen will be joined by their fellow Lanterns cast members Kelly McDonald as Sherrif Kerry, Garrett Dillahunt as William Macon, and Poorna Jagannathan, who will play a potential love interest for John Stewart named Zoe. On Instagram, Ulrich shared a photo of Deadline’s report on his Lanterns casting, noting that although the superhero genre is new to him, “it’s going to be fun.” Fortunately for Thomsen, he’ll have several talented individuals to guide him in this “new genre.”

Lost, The Leftovers, and HBO’s Watchmen series creator Damon Lindelof co-wrote Lanterns with Chris Mundy and Tom King, with Mundy also serving as showrunner. The first two Lanterns episodes will be directed by James Hawes, whose past directorial credits include episodes of Black Mirror, Penny Dreadful, Doctor Who, and many more popular shows. So, there’s no shortage of behind-the-scenes talent familiar with genre projects that are also acclaimed.

Thomsen himself is well-known for playing Kai Proctor on the Cinemax series titled Banshee, among other roles. His resume is impressive, so fans should rest easy knowing Sinestro is in more than capable hands. The murder being investigated in Lanterns is connected to the larger DCU story Gunn plans to tell. So, fans are excited to see how Sinestro factors into this mystery.

Lanterns is expected to premiere on HBO in 2026.
