Wonder weapons are a Call of Duty Zombies staple, and returning to the game with season two of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the Staff of Ice. First introduced in Black Ops 2, this magical staff does precisely as its name implies: freeze anything in its path, which is obviously a very useful ability to have in a game like this.

Don’t expect the game to just give you the Staff of Ice, though. You’ll be working for it or be taunted by the game for it, but it’s worth the effort for its crowd-control potential alone. You’ll learn everything you need to know about getting the Staff of Ice here.
How To Get The Staff Of Ice
There are two ways to get the Staff of Ice in The Tomb. The “easiest” is to play the mystery box for it. The other is to solve puzzles in the level.
Like most Wonder Weapons, the Staff of Ice is a possible drop from the box, but you’ll be contending with the random chance of the box. The luckiest among us could get it on the first pull from the box, but you might also waste thousands of Essence in the process.
You can, of course, use a Legendary Wonderbar! Gobblegum for a guaranteed Staff of Ice, but unless you’ve played a lot of Zombies, those might be in short supply.
The more consistent way to get the Staff of Ice is to solve a series of puzzles and then defend the Staff as it manifests.
How To Get All Three Pieces Of The Staff Of Ice
Before you can craft the Staff of Ice, you need three items: the Monocle, the Head, and the Staff. The Monocle is the simplest. Reach round seven and defeat the Shock Mimic that spawns. It drops the Monocle where it dies.
Next, you need to solve two puzzles to unlock the Head and Staff parts.
One puzzle you’ll find on square D3 on the top lane of the map in the room with the bull paintings and Death Perception. The other puzzle is on the lower lane in square D5, just a bit northeast of Deadshot Daiquiri. Look for a wall painting of a bow-wielding warrior.
The first part of the puzzle is the simplest. As you explore The Tomb, you’ll see purple-white glowing crystals in tentacled torch sconces. There are 18 of them total — nine for the top lane and nine for the bottom.
Shooting these crystals destroys them and causes them to move to another sconce based on the direction you were facing when you shot them. Your goal is to push the crystal torches as close to that lane’s painting as possible.
- For the upper lane, the crystal torch needs to be directly across from the bull painting.
- On the lower lane, the torch should shine from the sconse in the room with the warrior painting, across from the crafting bench.
So while you should always shoot the crystal torches while facing toward their intended destination, the tracking and their placement don’t always allow for accurate aiming.
You may have to shoot a few extra times, but keep yourself pointed toward the proper torch sconce, and the crystal will get there in due time.
Once the crystal is as close as possible to its linked painting, a set of symbols will appear on the paintings on the wall. These symbols are like Roman numerals, and you need to shoot them in the correct order from lowest to highest to progress.
- One looks like a single squiggly line.
- Two is two squiggly lines stacked on top of one another.
- Three is three squiggly lines stacked on top of one another.
- Four is a V shape with a line on its left side.
- Five is a V shape on its own.
- Six is a V shape with a line to its right.
- Seven is a V shape with a full line and a half-line to its right.
- Eight is a V shape with two full lines to its right.
- Nine is an X shape with a line to its left.
- Ten is an X shape with no additional markings.
Each time you shoot a symbol, it will briefly glow blue. A correct selection then glows green, and an incorrect selection glows red. There is no punishment for shooting the wrong symbol beyond a short delay before you can try again.
There are eight symbols on the bull painting, and ten on the warrior. After shooting them in the correct order, your screen will flash white, removing all standard zombies from the map.
While active, the puzzle combat challenge areas are marked as unique spaces within the level, and you can enter and leave them whenever you like. Standard zombies aren’t allowed in; puzzle zombies are not allowed out.
Shortly after the flash recedes, a pink energy orb will form near the surface of the painting. It will then fly off and float in an area nearby, summoning a wave of zombies. Unlike standard zombies, these puzzle-specific ones aren’t affected by the flames the crystal torches leave behind.
There are five waves, one per location, and each is tougher than the last. The first two waves contain regular zombies, Vermin, and Parasites, but the final three waves pit you against both Shock Mimics and Doppalgasts.
There’s no time limit to clearing these enemies, but they all must be destroyed to reach the next wave.
When the last enemy dies, the purple energy orb will return to the painting and reward you with a Max Ammo, the Head Piece part for the lower lane, and the Staff for the upper lane.
How To Assemble The Staff Of Ice
Here comes the tough part. To assemble the Staff of Ice, you need to go into the Dark Aether realm, which is accessible via the Door to Nowhere portals. You open the first by inserting the Amulet key item into the altar in the eastern room in The Tomb.
In the Dark Aether, approach the center ritual sculpture with its three large circle ornaments. Press your platform’s interact button in front of the small hole in the sculpture’s center to summon the Staff parts, then get ready for a fight.
Hordes of zombies, Parasites, Vermin, and eventually Elite zombies will begin to spawn. Your goal is to keep the enemies away from the Staff for 90 seconds while it fully manifests, a tall order when nearly 50 zombies are attacking all at once.
During this final combat challenge, zombies will attempt to approach the Staff and damage it. If its health bar reaches zero, the manifestation will fail, and you’ll need to start a new round to try again. The process is otherwise the same.
Here are some tips to successfully assemble the Staff of Ice:
- Bring a shotgun for mass-clearing potential for the least amount of ammo.
- Have your weapons at least Pack-a-Punch level two.
- Use the Idle Eyes Legendary Gobblegum to freeze all zombies in place for 30 seconds.
- Use AoE Field Upgrades like Energy Mine to clear the central area quickly.
- Use Cymbal Monkeys, Decoy Grenades, and LT53 Kazimir Tactical Equipment to keep zombies distracted and/or dead.
- If you’re doing the puzzle at a late round, use the Mutant Injector while standing near the Staff for an almost foolproof way to kill every zombie in the room.
Provided you can protect the Staff of Ice for the 90 seconds it needs to assemble, you’ll see a final white flash and be able to grab the Wonder Weapon for yourself to use as your secondary weapon. Note that it does take up a weapon slot, so be sure you don’t mind losing the weapon it replaces.
