Summary

  • Gojo’s death was inevitable due to the plot and his role, not his strength.
  • Gege Akutami’s handling of Gojo’s death lacked closure and respect.
  • Gojo’s dream is carried on by Yuji Itadori, showcasing his lasting impact.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s end was certainly sad for quite a few fans, but some took it harder than others, especially the fans of a certain blue-eyed character who was popular even beyond the spheres of the series and quite possibly an icon in the world of anime and manga.

Jujutsu Kaisen recieves 4 new illustrations. These illustrations feature multiple characters.

This character is none other than Gojo Satoru, the strongest modern sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen and the one who ended up meeting his end in the very last arc of the series. Gege Akutami, the author of the story, had Gojo meet a rather disappointing end, and to many fans, the potential that this character had was killed with him. Gojo’s end was not handled in the best possible way, and his fans certainly have a reason to be disappointed.

How Gojo Was Killed Off

  • The Battle Resulted In Gojo’s Death

Right from the get-go, fans knew that Gojo Satoru and Sukuna were going to meet at some point in combat. This was the most anticipated battle in the entirety of Jujutsu Kaisen, and fans know that this clash was such that it ended up becoming the peak of the entire series. Whatever came after it was definitely not anywhere near as good, and what came before was a buildup to this massive battle. Since Gojo and Sukuna were destined to battle, a lot of the fans had already accepted the fact that Gojo would die.

Farewell, Gojo Satoru! I shall remember you for as long as I live. — Sukuna

This wasn’t because Gojo was weaker than Sukuna. In fact, if anything, his performance against Sukuna was phenomenal and he was dominant through the vast majority of the fight, even though Sukuna had Megumi’s 10 Shadows Technique on top of his own. Gojo’s death was bound to happen because he wasn’t the protagonist. It is safe to say that Gojo was strong, but because Yuji needed his moments in the battle against Sukuna, one almost certainly couldn’t ignore the fact that Gojo needed to be cast aside. That’s precisely what happened in the story, and Sukuna, through a rather questionable method, was able to bypass Gojo’s Infinity and cut him down in two. This was the end of Gojo Satoru and this also marked the end of the clash between the two mighty sorcerers.

It is safe to say that Gojo’s death was necessary in many ways. Had Gojo not died, the plot wouldn’t have moved forward and Yuji wouldn’t have been the savior that he ended up being. In many ways, Gojo’s “Strongest” trope ended up serving as a plot device for Yuji to announce himself to the world. However, while Gojo’s death or defeat was necessary, the way it was handled was certainly not the best. Even after Gojo’s defeat, fans knew that there were many plotlines surrounding his character that were left untied and fans would’ve loved to explore. As such, his ending was rather abrupt, and in many ways, a big mistake for Gege Akutami, especially since he was the most popular character and the face of the franchise.

Gojo Was Never Given A Funeral

Gege’s Rushed Ending Never Gave Gojo His Flowers

Gege Akutami’s ending for the character of Gojo Satoru was rather bizarre, especially when considering the fact that his loss wasn’t even acknowledged by the vast majority of the characters in the story. Gojo died in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 236, and immediately after, fans saw the fighting continue in Shinjuku. Those on the sidelines hardly showed any emotions and it was unbelievable for many. Even though Gojo was brought up through the many flashbacks, the treatment his character got in the actual timeline was quite bad. Hardly anyone recognized the burden that Gojo had to lift, with Yuta being the only one who understood it. Even though Gojo was the backbone of the Jujutsu Society, hardly anyone acknowledged the loss.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Yuji Itadori’s Three Most Important Moments, Explained

Itadori has had some important mentors and allies across the JJK series. These 3 are the most impactful ones.

In fact, even in death, Gojo didn’t get peace. Yuta used his body to fight Sukuna, and while Gojo had already consented to this, the fact that he was simply used as a weapon, especially when it didn’t even amount to anything, was absolutely shocking for many. Gojo’s body was stitched and pieced together, and the worst part was that Gege didn’t even give him a funeral. Whereas characters who died got their own funeral, such as Tsumiki, and potentially even Geto, Gojo’s body, which was used as a weapon, was never shown to the fans again after being desecrated, which was truly a horrible decision by the author.

While all this can be pinned down to a rushed ending for the series at the same time, it must also be remembered that Gege gave a funeral to Tsumiki and Gojo could easily have had one, where all the people important in his life acknowledged him and the impact he had on their lives. Such a moment should’ve been the priority for the author, given the importance of the character of Gojo.

Gojo’s Dream Lives On In Yuji Itadori

Yuji Itadori Inherited What Was Left Of Gojo

While it is true that Gojo’s death didn’t leave fans happy and that the way it was handled by the author left a sour taste in the mouths of the fans, it is also true that, at the very least, Gojo’s dreams were entirely sacrificed. Gojo was never able to see his dream come to fruition, but he didn’t need to. As was revealed in the last chapter of JJK, the conversation between Yuji and Gojo solidified to him that he had nothing to worry about. Even when he was about to face the strongest of all time, Gojo had unshakable confidence, and this wasn’t because he felt he’d definitely win, but simply because he knew that he could entrust everything to Yuji, so even if he did die, the future of the world was going to be good.

Haven’t we had enough of Gojo Satoru already? — Gojo

Gojo specifically asked Yuji to seek a different kind of strength than him, and this way, Gojo’s dream of resetting the world and nurturing the next generation became the dream of Yuji Itadori. The Jujutsu Society was officially reset at the end of the series, with better people at the helm, and Yuji and Yuta serving as the two carriers of Gojo’s will. It must be said that even though Gojo himself didn’t get a good ending, his importance will always be maintained through the characters of Yuji Itadori and Yuta Okkotsu, two individuals who fans absolutely adore. Hopefully, if JJK does ever continue, fans will get to see Yuji and Yuta carry on his wishes again.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s last chapter, JJK 271, was finally released on September 29, 2024. Fans can read the series on the Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump apps.
