Final Fantasy 14 Fans Are Calling For Job Quests To Come Back

Summary

  • Final Fantasy 14 fans are calling for the return of job quests, following a disappointing set of role quests in Dawntrail.
  • Many feel like job quests give each job a bit more identity, and that a single job quest at level caps would be a good way to meet back up with popular characters.
  • Another suggested solution would be to include job mentors in role quests, giving us characters we care about rather than another batch of newcomers.

Final Fantasy 14 has gotten rid of a lot of things as the game has expanded and become more in-depth, and one of those things was job quests. As more and more jobs were added to the game, it became more and more unfeasible to ask for specific job quest storylines for each one. Nowadays, only newly added jobs get job quests, while the rest have to go without them.

In an attempt to try and replace job quests, Final Fantasy 14 introduced role quests in Shadowbringers, requiring you to use ranged DPS, melee DPS, magic DPS, tank, and healer roles to complete each set. It was well-received in Shadowbringers, but Endwalker and especially Dawntrail’s role quests have left a lot to be desired.

Dawntrail’s disappointing role quests now have quite a lot of players wishing for job quests to make a comeback, such as Reddit user Shrek1onDVD, who thinks that it’s disappointing all jobs “get homogenized into one quest for our role.” It’s a relatively common complaint in the entire thread, with other users like RenAsa claiming that the loss of job quests resulted in the “loss of the identities of our jobs”.

Of course, creating full job quest storylines for Dawntrail would have needed an extra 110 side quests to be made, but a lot of people also like the idea of having a single job quest at level cap so you can interact with old mentors and characters that you essentially never see again. For example, a user called Carinwe_Lysa says they’re disappointed that Arya from the Red Mage job quests and Sophie/Radovan from the Gunbreaker job quests are endlessly waiting in Mor Dhona now.

There is one caveat to the potential return of the job quest though, and that is to stop locking abilities behind them. It can be quite annoying to have crucial abilities locked behind story you may not be in the mood for, and a lot more people would be down for job quests to return if this wasn’t the case, and make the reward some interest lore or job-specific glam.

Another interesting solution, posed by user Twisty1020, is the use of the job quest mentors in specific role quests, rather than another set of NPCs you struggle to connect with. Imagine if Dawntrail’s tank role quest saw Curious Gorge interacting with Fray, or the healer role quests had Leveva and Lalah working together. They’re both Sharlayan, it would work so well!

Unfortunately, it would be a lot of work for Square Enix to do, especially with the MSQ getting longer and longer with each expansion, so the return of job quests will most likely always be a dream. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that 8.0’s next set of role quests is better than Dawntrail’s, because good lord they were rough.
