Summary

  • A talented Doom fan has already added elements from Doom: The Dark Ages to the original game.
  • The mod adds some of the new weapons from the upcoming game to the 1993 version of Doom.
  • It has also remade the game’s enemies and added Glory Kills which weren’t a part of the early Doom titles.

Doom: The Dark Ages is one of the most-anticipated games of 2025. So anticipated that even now it has a release date, some Doom fans simply can’t wait until May 15 to get a taste of what it’s going to feel like. If all you want is a taste, for now, then you can have one via a mod for the original Doom that brings elements of The Dark Ages to the first game in the series.

The mod is called Darkfall and is available through Discord thanks to duskredy (via PCGamesN). Its creator has taken the little we’ve seen of The Dark Ages so far and imported as much of it as they can into the OG Doom from 1993. Most notably some of the new weapons we can’t wait to get our hands on like the shield saw and whatever that gun is which crushes up skulls and uses them as ammo.

On top of adding weapons from Doom: The Dark Ages to the game where it all began, the Darkfall mod has also remade its enemies and even added Glory Kills. Glory Kills are impressive melee actions that were introduced to the series via the modern Doom games, although they appear to have undergone a name change in The Dark Ages. Either way, the Darkfall mod gives you the chance to perform them as if they had been there all along.

Some Of The Dark Ages Has Already Been Modded Into The Original Doom

The Perfect Way To Pass The Time Between Now And May 15

Doom is rather famously one of the most versatile games around when it comes to modding. The original game can be played in so many different ways that it has effectively become a meme. I’d argue it’s actually gone beyond meme status at this point. The statement Doom can now be played in Doom reads like a Hard Drive headline poking fun at all the weird and wonderful ways Doom fans have made the game playable, but it’s real and something you have been able to do since 2022.

The Doom Slayer in Doom: The Dark Ages.

It’s already clear that despite how different The Dark Ages will look compared to the first game in the series, which turns 32 this year, ID hasn’t forgotten its roots. Doomguy’s HUD is referenced in the new game, and while it’s fanmade, I feel like I can safely assume the mod adding elements from The Dark Ages to ’93’s Doom is the sort of thing that will be celebrated and embraced by the Doom devs.
