If you want to get a gun in Project Zomboid, you’re going to have to work hard and take risks. Personally, I favor the army surplus store in Fallas Lake. The town is relatively small and the quantity of guns and bullets can be high. Nevertheless, you still need a sledgehammer to get into the armory. Same goes for the Louisville checkpoint and most of the police stations in Knox Country. It’s a lot of investment and return isn’t guaranteed. Proving that The Indie Stone’s survival game has the edge on The Long Dark, DayZ, and Rust, another new Project Zomboid update for the unstable build 42 is already here, and it makes big improvements to how we find and use guns.

Years in the making, Project Zomboid build 42 represents a gigantic transformation of the zombie survival game. The light effects have been reworked, the aiming system is new, and you can now raise animals, among myriad other additions and changes. For the time being, build 42 is still in the ‘unstable’ beta phase, but The Indie Stone is seemingly throwing everything it’s got at this latest version – after a hotfix in December and two updates earlier this month, including one for Zomboid’s maps, another patch has just arrived.

There are a lot of changes here. If you’re playing in debug mode and find a car key, there is now an option to teleport to the car that the key is for. There are also dozens of bug fixes, some new item models, and from here on out, chicken eggs will no longer hatch if they’re too cold, which means no more raising a flock in your refrigerator.

The most significant changes however relate to gun spawns and how your character behaves during combat. For build 42, The Indie Stone has increased your chance of finding guns in both police stations and gun shops themselves, with the objective of making these locations “more rewarding to loot.” Although the actual metal lockers that contain shotguns haven’t been added yet, in time, the storage areas in the prison in build 42 will also contain more armor and weaponry.

In terms of the actual mechanics of combat, so far you might have noticed some animation problems whereby your character twists too far around either when using melee or ranged weapons. From now on, if you’re unarmed or using a one-handed weapon, your character’s upper body can twist a maximum of 45 degrees. For two-handed and projectile weapons, the twist remains locked at 70 degrees.

It’s a helpful fix. As well as looking unusual, the twisting glitch has also meant that your character’s line of sight doesn’t rotate properly – even though you move your mouse to face in a different direction, the character’s body doesn’t move as you intended, leaving you vulnerable to attacks. In combination with the increased gun spawns, and the other tweaks and additions, staying alive in Project Zomboid build 42 should now be a little easier.
