  • The canceled Warhammer RPG was being developed by Thought Pennies, a studio that previously worked on Star Wars and Final Fantasy.
  • It was designed to offer a socially interactive player-versus-environment experience, supported by Nexon’s renowned Live Operations.
  • The game was intended for release on PC, consoles, and mobile platforms.

Nexon has canceled its Warhammer RPG that was based on the Age of Sigmar title. The game was under development by a new studio, called Thought Pennies, but the cancellation has led to significant layoffs at the studio.

Nexon has recently axed a Warhammer RPG, being developed by Thought Pennies

According to sources from MP1st, an unannounced Warhammer RPG had been recently canceled, and the game was in development by Thought Pennies, a new studio with experience in franchises such as Star Wars and Final Fantasy

Additionally, a new report from Eurogamer revealed that the game was based on Warhammer: Age of Sigmar title. According to the report, several developers left the studio following the game’s cancellation. The game was being developed in collaboration with Nexon and Games Workshop.

A Thought Pennies spokesperson told Eurogamer, “While the partnership worked well and we got a lot of good input from Nexon, Nexon made a strategic change,” and further added, “Late last year we agreed to end the project and Nexon is helping as a board member.

The game was being planned for PC, consoles, and mobile platforms

According to a press release from 2021, Nexon announced a licensing agreement with Games Workshop to develop and publish this game. It was described as a PvE Social Multiplayer and was in development for PC, consoles, and mobile platforms. However, the developer Thought Pennies was not mentioned in the release.

The game aimed to offer “a socially interactive player-versus-environment world supported by Nexon’s world-class Live Operations for sustaining the fun with new content and service.

I wish this project hadn’t been canceled, as the game seemed promising, allowing you to lead the war hosts of the God-king Sigmar and his allies, to restore hope and bring order. Additionally, according to the details, you could collect characters with unique options, stories, and gameplay, while exploring new realms each season. It’s disappointing that we won’t get to see it come to life.

On the brighter side, Games Workshop is aiming to further expand the Warhammer series following the Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2‘s success, which I haven’t tried yet. Additionally, the studio and Amazon Studios have officially finalized plans to bring Warhammer 40K to both film and TV.
