On January 28, Steam released a client update for users to download, which fixed some errors that can occur when reconnecting to the service or accessing certain features in Big Picture Mode. The new Steam client patch came just a few days after Valve released a larger update that changed the user interface’s download and installation progress bars.

As the leading digital distributor of PC games for over two decades, Valve periodically releases Steam desktop client updates to give users access to new features. In 2024, following user feedback concerning privacy, Valve released an update that allowed users to label some Steam games as private and hide their ownership and game activities from their friends. Additionally, Steam updates are released to address performance concerns on PC and Steam Deck, including when certain client functions do not behave as intended, or if certain controllers do not work in specific games.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Fans Have Serious Concerns About Its PC Release

With the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PC right around the corner, fans are growing increasingly concerned for several reasons.

Just days after releasing a major Steam client update that changed how the download and installation bars appeared, Valve released a smaller client update for PC users to download. The new Steam client update, released on January 28 at 2:37 PM Eastern, requires approximately 57 MB of free storage space to download and install. This small update brought a few general fixes and resolved a few issues with Big Picture Mode and Steam Input.

Before the January 28 client update, users reported the L3 and R3 buttons did not work on some devices, including fight sticks and other controllers lacking analog axe functions. Along with automatic updates, users can also manually check for Steam client updates by clicking the Steam logo on the top left of the screen and selecting the appropriate drop-down option. Users must then restart Steam to finish the installation process.

The new Steam update came amid a busy start to 2025 for Valve. Although the Steam Deck continues to be a valuable and portable way for gamers to play their favorite PC titles, Valve confirmed at CES 2025 that Lenovo’s upcoming Legion Go S handheld will have a SteamOS model, making it the first device not made by Valve to include its operating system. The SteamOS version of the Legion Go S will be available in May 2025, starting at $499.

With games such as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth selling well on Steam, the PC gaming juggernaut is showing no signs of slowing down. Only time will tell what features Valve has planned for future Steam client updates.
