Is Sea of Thieves on PS4, or you need an upgrade to the PS5?

We got 4 titles coming over to PlayStation from the Microsoft exclusives, including the swashbuckling pirate game. But if you still go strong with the older PS gen, you might wonder; is Sea of Thieves on PS4?

Is Sea of Thieves playable on the PS4?

Unfortunately, the only PlayStation system you can play Sea of Thieves on, is the current generation. Because of how long it took to come over to the Sony ecosystem, the PS5 is the only way to play.

The game did originally launch for the 8th generation of consoles of Xbox One, so in theory it could have ran on PS4. But using the best Sea of Thieves settings for the current game is pretty poor on a console over 10 years old. Looking to prioritize performance on their crossover titles, it looks like the devs chose to prioritize a PS5 specific release, instead of trying to reach as many consoles as possible. Its a frequent reminder that the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are not Next Generation consoles, but the current generation.

The Sea of Thieves player count is not as big as it would be if the game was available to more consoles. It’s still in the thousands, even if Sea of Thieves is not on the PS4.

Blimey! Any similar games for the PS4?

Just because Sea of Thieves is not on the PS4, it doesn’t mean all hope is lost. There have been competitors to Microsoft’s once exclusive for those looking to sail the high seas on a Sony console or a Switch.

For tight ship gameplay, Assassins creed 4: Black Flag was unironically one of the best open-world games at it’s time. This title put pirate ship combat on the map, and also has the other benefits of being an Assassin’s creed title.

King of Seas might not have reviewed particularly well, but if you’re looking for as close an experience to Sea of Thieves, in both thematic and gameplay, a watered down version is still better than nothing at all.

Both Windbound and Raft play much more into the survival aspects of the game, rather than specifically focusing on the sailing and sword swinging. If you just want to be on the ocean and sailing away, they’re both good stand-ins. Unfortunately, the latter is a ‘PS5 only’ game at the time of writing, but it’s also one of the best online games to play with friends.
