Summary
- X-Men MCU reboot rumors include Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer as Mystique.
- Kevin Feige is bringing back Fox’s X-Men actors through the Multiverse Saga.
- Fans are excited over Schafer’s potential casting as Mystique but it’s just a rumor.
X-Men MCU reboot cast rumors are seemingly dropping more frequently. One name allegedly put forward for the role of Mystique is Euphoria star Hunter Shafer and new fan art reveals what she could look like as the blue-skinned mutant.
When Marvel Studios regained the film rights to the X-Men through Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, fans were immediately excited to see the fan-favorite characters join the MCU. Most assumed Marvel Studios would reboot the X-Men franchise and cast new actors as the mutants (and that could still happen). However, Kevin Feige appears content using the Multiverse Saga to bring back actors from Fox’s X-Men movies before rebooting the franchise. Still, with nearly every MCU project left in the Multiverse saga announced, many fans are already looking forward to what happens with the X-Men after Avengers: Secret Wars.

X-Men MCU cast rumors appear to be circulating more frequently, with Stranger Things star Sadie Sink reportedly considered to play the MCU’s Jean Grey. Digital artist Aitesam Farooq (@spdrmnkyxxiii) responded to an alleged rumor that Schafer is eyed to play the MCU’s Mystique by creating new artwork that imagines her in the iconic role. The first image shows Schafer’s Mystique with the character’s classic blue skin on one side and the actress’s appearance on the other. In this image, Schafer’s Mystique is wearing the white dress the character famously dons in the comics. However, the second image depicts a clothless Mystique.
Unlike the rumor claiming Wicked star Cynthia Erivo is considered to play X-Men’s Storm, fan response to the idea of Shafer playing Mystique is more positive. “She would do amazingly in the role!” wrote Andrew Brockhaus, a sentiment echoed by many others in the photo’s comments section. When one fan noted that Shafer as Mystique would be “accurate casting,” another user asked if they only felt Schafer was a good choice to play the shapeshifting Mystique because she is a trans woman. “Nah,” Instagram user Kaidon Kraemer replied. “She just looks the part.”
Of course, this is merely a rumor (and one that seemingly came out of nowhere). Feige has indicated that the X-Men will play an important role in the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars. This has led some fans to speculate that Avengers: Secret Wars will reboot the MCU and establish a new continuity in which the X-Men were always part of the universe. This could pave the way for new actors to take the classic X-Men roles (though Hugh Jackman is rumored to play Wolverine for another decade). Regardless, Shafer playing Mystique is far from official and there’s still a lot of time to cast the new X-Men. Still, fans are seemingly thrilled at the idea of seeing Shafer play the fan-favorite shapeshifter.
Marvel Studios’ X-Men is in development.
